My copy of UT2003 arrived via UPS today. When I open the setup application, I enter my CD Key, click "Continue" and the setup program unexpectedly quits. This happens on my dual G4/867 and my Powerbook G4/867, both running 10.2.6, with no other applications running. I also tried quitting all my background apps (i.e. Launchbar, Meteorologist, etc) as well as running the setup app from my hard drive. Neither approach worked.

Anyone else experiencing this, and even better anyone have a workaround?

Hmm...that doesn't sound healthy at all. I'd call the tech. support number on the box and explain your problem...it's very possible that you got a bum disc. Do other CD games/apps install fine?

Try booting your system in safe boot mode. Hold shift during startup until the system starter begins. (MacOSX Loading with progress bar). It should say SAFE MODE.

Then, try installing it. Good luck. I hope to get mine monday if the Apple Store gets it.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately that didn't work either. I've emailed Macsoftgames tech support. I'll report back here what they say. I hope the solution is as easy as a bad CD and they don't have some major bug in the installer they didn't catch.

And yes, other CD apps install fine. I just installed Spyhunter on my Mac last week and everything went fine.

I called MacSoft and they just asked that I send a ASP report to them.

Nothing yet on their website either.

Any clues?

IF THE ENGLISH MAC UT2003 INSTALLER CRASHES AFTER YOU ENTER YOUR CD KEY:
Then please download this (2.1 megabytes):
http://icculus.org/updates/ut2003/ut...ed.cdr.dmg.bz2

You should end up with a disk image with an installer icon. Run it, and
install as usual. When the installation is done, throw away the disk image
and pretend nothing ever went wrong. This is an installer bug; the game
itself runs as usual.

The retail disc installer apparently calls CFRelease() on an invalid pointer
(whoops), which has caused a most unsatisfying crash for a small percentage
of people. We never saw this one, but those that trigger it seem to do so
reliably. The French CDs have this fix already, so this is just for the
English retail version that shipped on June 11th if you crash for no
apparent reason after entering your CD key.

(This is not really tested, since we couldn't reproduce the crash, though.
reports of success are welcome.)

I got bit by it too, kind of frustrating. Its not like I have some weird hardware or haven't updated OSX. Its a dual gig and I'm running 10.2.6, I'm downloading that patch from icculusFinger, hopefully it does the trick.

I also emailed macsoft, might as well get on record to show that its a problem widespread???? who knows.

Glad to see I'm not the only one having the problem. The new setup patch worked fine and the game plays wonderfully. Glad to know that everything works fine.
