Graeme Devine's .plan:
There's a new build of Quake3 for Mac OS X on the id ftp server. This is for 10.2 or later only. This version fixes support for certain add in audio sound cards, adds a brand new ppc QVM compiler, and "tada" adds Altivec code to aid MD3 rendering. Thanks go to Apple and especially Ken Dyke over there for making this happen.
I tried it. Saw a slight improvement in FPS, however, the sound has scratching in it, like static. You may have better luck than me.

I just tried the new Quake3 build for 10.2 and the G4. My memory might be faulty, but I think i was getting fps in the 70s in single player mode(first map, first level) and now I'm getting fps in the 90s-100.

I'm getting the same problems as some guy who posted about it in the quake3world forums(Mac Discussions), I'm getting errors messages from the console (Maybe concerning Punkbuster?)and the game crashes when I'm in multi-player mode and searching for game servers. These problems never occured on the old build. Hopefully them will be resolved.

I've got the same problems with the sound. Wish I didn't install it.

Downloading know. Seems like the server is bussy, really slow Anyway, is it any good ? Faster or what ? I had some mod troubles with the last one as well. And out of topic, which mod do you recommend ? I could use some new ones. I like best StrikeForce and CS like mods. I've never like Q3 Arena, but the engine is still strong !!!

The snap, crackle, pop noises I and others were experiencing are gone...same with the spewage showing up in the console.

But the performance of the the 6/16 and 6/18 releases on my Dual 800 with GeForce 2 MX hasn't changed from earlier releases. But I'm glad others are seeing a boost.

With a dual 800 and a 2MX, Quake 3 might be bus or video card limited on your machine, at least at higher resolutions... hence altivec wouldn't give you any performance increases.

It's definitely the 2MX.

Tried it. Still the same sound problems, especially with the plasma sound effects.

Doh!

Okay, I guess I'll keep on the sound issue. Believe it or not, I've got trouble replicating it.

Wow, welcome to the forums!

I'm using a QuickSilver G4 933MHz (January 2002) with onboard sound. The Quake 1.32 November 2002 build works fine. Using the latest G4 build and sound is awful with what sounds like static.

Also, the lastest build crashed on me. I was being hit with plasma and then it quit to desktop.

Yeah, I still have the static/crackling sound issue with the latest build. Ti Powerbook G4 667. Other than the sound everything seems to work fine.

I had very little luck with it either.

Audio glitches throughout and finally, it unexpectedly quit.
folding@home is good for you.
