Whoo! I love this game SO much back then. I'd really love to see a remade of GliderPro and I'd absolutely join as a graphic designer.

Great game! Sorry to see C&G go under but it's real nice of them to give this to us all.

Quite frankly I spent more time playing glider on my iivx than I ever did playing any of the games I buy now.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Downloaded it yesterday. A definite classic!

You know, a Palm OS version would be really neat, too...

It is cool that they've released this as freeware.

Unfortunately, I think the OS 9 version is better than the OS X version. The new one changed all the room graphics, making them darker, messing up the cheerful feel that the old game always had. Also, many houses with custom artwork are dependent on the old graphics, so they will probably cause strange visual effects in the OS X version as it is.

If anyone in this thread is new to Glider, I *highly* recommend downloading both the OS 9 versions and OS X versions, and pasting the PICT resources from the OS 9 version into the OS X version's .rsrc file to give it the classic feel. You can do this by using a utility such as ToggleForks to switch the resource and data forks of the .rsrc file inside the OS X version's bundle, then by using ResEdit to copy and paste all the PICT's from the Classic game to the .rsrc file, replacing when asked, and then by using ToggleForks again to move the resource data back into the data fork of the .rsrc file.

Wow, sounds complicated. I downloaded both just to check out the room editor on the os 9 version, but found that all the houses I've downloaded are locked . I also thought it was interesting, and something of a trend (or at least, as in pop-pop) that the os 9 version has several more options in the preferences... that makes it feel like a step back to os X! And of course, glider specific, the switching between rooms is a lot faster on os 9 - I get the feeling that a better optimized os X version would be well-received .

I just made a quick-and-dirty app to copy over the resources from the Classic version so that you can make the OS X version have the classic graphics. It is available here:

Wow, that does make quite a difference to the feeling, as you said. It's all just that much brighter and the sky all fits in correctly. It would be cool if we could still have the OS X transparent balloons as that was one thing I think was improved. I'm not sure if any of the other objects like that were changed / improved. Either way it's cool!

It always shows nine rooms for mine, and there doesn't seem to be any way to change that setting.

Have you tried deleting the preference file?

Glider is great. I still have the old one, but I remember an even older I once had. It was B&W only, and it was great. When I got the version that could have 16-colors (WOW), that was also great. Anybody have all the versions ? Then I can play in Basilisk.

C&G going under makes me
It is really sad. Glider was so great, and making it freeware is a great treasure and gift to all new mac users never played this great game. Even though the houses provided with the X version is a bit hard, even for who is a Hardcore Glider player

All the versions are at Calhoun's home page, even the old 16 color version.

I've never been able to get Basilisk to run in 16 colors, though. If you know how to do this, I would really appreciate it if you would share the knowledge in this thread!

I got Basilisk II to run in 16 colors. I changed the depth in the preferences to 4 bit (unsure if that was necessary) and changed the colors from within Mac OS 8.1 to 16 colors. Worked great!

I just wish Basilisk II had sound support so I could play Dark Castle.

What operating system were you running Basilisk under? Last time I tried running it in X11 it wouldn't let me change the screen depth. It only wanted to use the same depth the system was set to.

10.2 with Nigel Pearson's port available here. I tried the X11 version with Fink once but was unable to get it running... some kind of error message.

Meh... it keeps crashing for me, and it has no sound. Definitely a long shot from the WinNT version.

Oh, and to answer an earlier question:

You should check out vMac. It has sound, and it is able to play Dark Castle.

Unfortunately, vMac has problems with USB keyboards which affects Dark Castle and causes the character to move in strange directions, making the game unplayable. Richard Bannister confirmed the bug but has no plans to fix it anytime soon.

Mini vMac, based off vMac, doesn't have this bug, but it doesn't have sound either. Maybe if someone combined the key support from Mini vMac with the rest of vMac, it would work.

I used to own Dark Castle long ago (although I was six or seven at the time). Is there any way to acquire it again (legally)?

If you buy the new color version, you should be able to get the old version for $5:
