Hi,

I'm trying to get into some Mac games and am having problems finding something I like.

Basically, I'm looking for a simple, no nonsense, OS X-compatible (I don't have OS 9 installed and don't want to install it just for a game) game that I can play and enjoy, that keeps me occupied and entertained without too much thinking involved.

I'm not into complicated role-playing adventures, first-person shooters that have so many controls I get dizzy, online games that you play with hundreds of people across the globe, racing games, simulations, strategy, sports, etc. I don't want a game that takes hours and hours to play, that requires saving and then starting up at the point you saved the next time you play, etc.

I don't mind if it's a shareware game, freeware or commercial. It can be any of the above.

I just downloaded the Snood demo and seem to like it (though I'm still trying to figure it out). I guess that's considered an "arcade" game, so maybe that's what I'm looking for. I've tried stuff like Otto Matic and that's okay, though, again, the controls can get somewhat complicated.

Anyway, if anybody has any good suggetions, I'd like to hear them!

Thanks in advance.

Try:

1) Oids -- old Mac game, now on OSX. Very fun and a simple premise

2) Pop Pop and Bubble Trouble. Fun arcade games

3) Glider PRO -- fun game, now free since C&G went out of business

Some of the Ambrosia Software games may be just what you're after.

You may want to look at, for example, pop-pop or Bubble Trouble. They both seem to fit what you're looking for, at least to some degree.

Alchemy Deluxe
Bejeweled
Blobs
Glider Pro
GLTron
Maelstrom
Marble Blast
Pac the Man
Super Collapse
Super Nisqually.

All of these can be found at http://www.macupdate.com

Let me put in another vote for Glider Pro. Great, I mean great, game, and exactly what you're looking for.

You can download many houses (levels for Glider Pro) at Alex Diener's archive.

Unfortunately, they revamped the graphics in the OS X version of Glider Pro, making things darker and less compatible with existing houses. If you would like to put the graphics from the OS 9 version of Glider Pro into the OS X version, I have written and quick-and-dirty app called GliderNostalgia, which you can find at Alex Diener's archive via the link I posted above.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Marble Blast - free if you have a .mac membership to boot. It's like Marble Madness on steroids.

We bought Aladdin Software's "Ten for X Games" (basically a published collection of shareware games) and became addicted to Burning Monkey Puzzle Lab.
