Wow, got my hopes up, and it crashes on the character creation screen, within the first 30 seconds. Nice. Anyway, I've been playing, and it seems to randomly crash when it feels like it. Also, the textures seem ****ed up, on armadillos and the ogres in Oggokk. Everything else is fine. See here: http://homepage.mac.com/mindfad/.Pictures/wtfeq.jpg
I reinstalled freshly, and the textures were the same. Is this a normal problem?
So I'm a bit upset. I was very impressed with the packaging and setup ... but then the game started. I was all psyched for getting into it, too. What a let down. Hopefully there's some good patching sometime soon? I guess I'll see some of you mofos on.

Wow, I can walk around for about a minute and a half and then it crashes. That's number 5. What a blast. Hmm, maybe I'll try no sound. *sigh* $12.95 to crash every minute?

yah this happened to me also, here is how to fix it, in yer home/library/application support/ EverQuest/Texture Cache, delete all those textures, then, in the LP turn off texture compression and sound and it should play fine. You can turn all the rest on. There should be a in game sound fix out any day I hope playing with no sound suxs, its a 10.3 thing, Also sign up for the offical EQ boards. They helped me out in a few minutes of posting.

Yeah, I quickly figured out the compression was fudging up the model textures. That's fixed. It seems to be running now with the sound fine with compression off—everything it recommends off is off, really. We'll see—I'll probably just jinxed it.
My specs: dual 800 with GeForce 3 (64MB) and 768MB of RAM. It runs surprisingly well—I'm really impressed. Having those windows on screen gives a big hit to the framerate (quite noticeable when you hit F10 to make the HUD disappear while moving about), but what are ya gonna do? I'm genuinely impressed, and I'm enjoying the game ... well, the few minutes I played anyway.
Goreclench is my character's name, an Ogre Shadow Knight. I'm gonna go chat it up with the Mac EQ nerds in the plane of knowledge, I guess.

Glad to hear you got it up and running. That's the exact machine I'm running the game on. BTW, your zone times are based on your hard drive speed from what I can tell. My girlfriend's iMac doesn't do so well when zoning. Must be the laptop hard drive shes running. I'm thinking about getting her up and running on an external firewire drive when I find the time. Personally I use a WD 120GB 8MB cache drive and it seems to perform very well when zoning.
I use the F10 trick all the time. The Luclin zones are as bad as the Planes of Power zones when it comes to slowdowns. This is due to the high number of polygons in those zones. Usually when moving around those I tend to use the F10 trick. Also looking at the ground can help when shopping and moving stuff around in your inventory when in the PoK. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a tell. Will be happy to help you get up and running.

Well, I'm having fun. The graphics engine is showing its age, really. I think I'm pretty certain why the Plane of Knowledge runs so terribly. The developer was nice enough to add a poly reduction to the *low-res* character models—think Quake 3, where every model in the game has three separate lower-poly models depending on distance—but I have them all on high. I've noticed that the high-res models *don't* reduce in poly count. I did it for a few minutes to be sure, and I see no change in them, but I do in the low-res ones, which is odd. You'd think they would have put that effort into the models. So it's no wonder the PoK runs like poo—with more than three or four models onscreen in the PoK at full poly count no matter the model distance, on top of drawing the rest of the level ... *plop*.
Still, I'm enjoying it. I think I'll put the low-res models on for all other characters but me, so at least *I* look cool.

Yah POK does run bad, I think cause its the only level with out a distance fog. i think the engine could be optimized a bit more also. Anyway look for me. Wood Elf Ranger Kandian, and i'm easy to spot at night because i travel with a light aura thanx to a great light stone, so if u see a green armored guy that looks to be glowing thats me, hit me with a hail!

That was the fastest install/play/uninstall I've ever done. Wake me up when I can play with the sound on, ok?

I can play with sound. After turning off the texture compression, it was fine.

If you play a melee class the music gets old real quick. I have no qualms about playing with sound off. ITunes for me
