All I know is jedi academy IS coming to the mac soon.

Those cows won't know what hit 'em. They won't know what hit them even after it hits them, because they're cows.

I don't see KotOR coming to the Mac any time soon --
I reccommend a PC or (*gasp* *hack*) an Xbox.
Be happy.

It is totally worth an XBox to get it .

I wish I could complete it, I'm right at the end but can't defeat the droids machine.

That part isn't all that tricky, just not enough spikes or what?

Even that part isn't all that tricky. For each droid you kill a computer spike is left in a container from which that particular droid spawned. This part is plenty easy if it is in fact the part of the game in which you were referencing (i.e. the room filled with never-ending droids which Malak locks you in before running to the next area).

Ooh!

When Mr. Oliver asks 'why not?', my ears perk up. I would think that the reason 'why not' might be that since it's for PC and x-box exclusively now, it might be a very directx-dependent game. But who knows?

In this day and age, DirectX isn't really an impediment. The bulk of games brought to the Mac started out life using DirectX, and just about everyone doing Mac ports has a DX->OpenGL library that they use.

I was mainly curious to see if you guys had heard something about it that I'd missed.

Isn't the really impediment to porting games to the Mac due to the use of Microsoft networking APIs (DirectPlay)?

Peter Tamte recently said in an interview (Macworld UK?) how much work it took to make Halo's multiplayer work between PCs and Macs. And there was another story about how Raven Shield's networking is Mac only because it was too much work to convert the networking code.

It's frustrating that so many game developers are so willing to suck at the teats of Microsoft instead of using standards like OpenGL. It's a pretty easy way for a company to protest Microsoft's monopoly if they would just go with standards like OpenGL and MPEG. Instead, it's always DirectX, DirectPlay, WindowsMedia, etc.

I know, I know . . . money beats ideology and idealism and fighting the establishment every time.

That's a big one, all right.

Halo uses sockets, but it had other design issues that needed to be worked out, from what I understand.

I hope I'm not getting my Tom Clancy games mixed up, but my understanding was that it used a PC-only net library from UbiSoft, although the net effect for Mac users (no cross-platform play) is the same.

Bungie always had trouble with network code. And it goes aaaall the way down to Minotaur. Then Marathon had problems. Then Myth was alright I guess. But then Oni network support was dropped

Knights of the Old Republic is a BioWare game, isn't it?

Well, BG I and II, and Neverwinter Nights are BioWare games and we've got them. So, perhaps that bodes well for KotOR coming to the Mac platform.

I'm playing BG II right now and it's quite a game. Great audio and superb writing.

Yeah, BG2 is incredible. Aside from Morrowind, it's the most massive RPG out there (it's really too bad Morrowin never came to the Mac -- you Mac-only folk are really missing out ).
Be happy.

True dat but one can hope. I'd much rather play kotor than JA myself - I'm much more of a RPG fan than a FPS fan.
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

Morrowind was killer. Blew the dust of my xbox and killed of the two expansions when they released the goty edition. Shame it never saw light of day on the Mac, 'cuz it was awesome.
This brings up the question: why didn't anyone make it for the Mac? I understand Bethesda is a pc only developer, by why didn't some one (Aspyr?) work out a deal with Bethesda to bring it to the Mac? It would have sold a boat load of copies. I understand with the Mac market share, it's not going to be as profitable as the pc market, but profit is profit, right?

Playing Dues Ex 2 on my xbox. No Mac version. Hey, see that a new version of Thief is coming out for the xbox. Mac version? Yah, right.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

I've played this game on my friend's xbox, and it is indeed a very good made game. If this could see the day on the Mac, it would bring joy to a lot of Mac gamers out there.
