Hi, all. Thought this looked like the place to go for advice. I just got AvP2, it installed, and then when I tried to open it, I keep getting the following error message/alert:

"Current OpenGL Driver, ATiRage 128 ProOpenGl 1.1 ATI-1.3.0 won't allow GL_ARB_texture_compression, a neccessary component for the game. Make sure you're running the latest version of Mac OS and check with your Video Card Manufacturer for the latest drivers."

Well, needless to say I spent all last night trying to make sure everything was current. I updated to ATi's 11/03 update for my Classic Platform, I used the 10.3 update ATi posted in 11/03, and that was about all I could find that wasn't for an older operating system.

I'm running 10.3.1 on an iBook with 384 MB SDRAM, and when I check my video card info, it says it's "Powered by Unknown ATi, Card Model ATY,Rage M3, Rom Name ATY,RageM3p29s. NDRV version 1.0.0f6F." et al...

This is getting too complex for me... I've used a Mac my whole life, but never worried about the tech end of it until now (other than, it doesn't crash hardly at all, and it's really fast...)

So, oh wise gurus at MacNN, what do you think I should do?

If I end up needing to get a new video card, is it possible to get it installed as a component, so I don't have to get a new computer (seeing as how us students are always tight on funds)? How much does a good vid card run for? Is there one I could get that will allow me to run AvP2 that's decent but not the top of the line model? Is it possible to find "used" cards from people who have upgraded and are willing to sell the old one cheaply?

OK, that's about a million questions. Thanks for any and all help!

It looks like it won't run on your iBook. It requires at least a Radeon or Geforce video card, while your iBook has a ATI Rage 128.

To answer your other question, it's not possible to replace the GPU on any of Apple's current notebook line, as it's an integrated component on the motherboard.

Guess those probably weren't the answers you wanted to hear, eh?
