I guess one of the things I'll miss most about switching is the lack of Counter Strike (sensitive issue I know, sorry). Was just wondering what sort of FPS-rate those of you playing in Virtual PC are/were getting?
On my Vaio I get about 15-20fps in 640x480 with everything as low as poss, so my demands aren't high!
Could anyone post their FPS and Mac Spec?
Cheers
Fozz

i doubt that u can even get it to work in VPC, I couldn't get diablo 2 to work and that is less demending than counter strike i think. Starcraft also barely works. Runs ok but almost impossible to play online.

No-No.
Current version of VPC lacks 3D support.

Do the latest versions of CS still support software rendering though? The original Half-Life did...and if they still support software, then it should work in VPC regardless of that program's lack of support for 3D acceleration.

I ran Half Life on my Powerbook 1.25 under VPC. It was playable as long as I made the screen about half size. I ran counter-strike on my G3/400 under VPC once, it worked but completely unplayable.

goMac, using what version of VPC? VPC 5 has OpenGL support right?
I used to be such a hardcore gamer on pc and then I switched to mac...to get away from that, but Half-Life is someting I really miss. I'd like to be able to play again.

I was using VPC6 on Mac OS 9 in both cases. These days I usually just use my Dell laptop for Half Life. OS X was just too slow when I tried.
Oh, whoops, edit, I played Half Life on my TiBook 1 ghz, not my 1.25.

Yeah, I just tried and i had to use software mode and it was unplayable.
Apparently though VPC 5 did have OpenGL support, has anyone used this or know more about it?

I believe VPC 2 and 3 both had 3D support (through Glide), but it was dropped in 4 and up.

Yes, and only on Voodoo2 cards.

Supposedly the new VPC 7 will have DirectX support. This really scares me for a number of reasons; I have a feeling microsoft will peddle this to game developers as a cross-platform game library (even though it'll be a sort of emulation or HAL on mac). Mac game porting companies could go out of business...and in the end, pc weenies could still scream "macs are slower!" because the games would still run like crap, due to emulation, this time, not bad porting.
I hope that doesn't happen. Sorry that I don't have a link to go along with this...it was mentioned a couple of weeks ago somewhere.
(edit: oh, and they'll sell more copies of windows, those insidious bastards)

Voodoo 1 and 2 cards only. It's because they were pass through 3D cards. Voodoo3s and up wouldn't work because they were 2D and 3D cards with no pass through capabilities.
