Yes, I know most people who play games will object to using controllers when the keyboard is the preferred method of play but are there any that work well with Halo on the Mac platform? I am considering buying the game but I think I will need a push to get myself to buy it.

from the Halo Support page at macsoftgames:
"We did not implement gamepad support for the initial release version of Halo. However, we are looking into adding support for some game controllers in the future."

I'm not sure if this will help but there is a way to hack an xbox controller to work with your mac if you're used to using one of those instead of the keyboard and mouse. however, i don't know if it'll work with halo, there's an older thread about it somewhere.

Gravis has a game pad called the Eliminator After Schock:
http://www.gravis.com/products/pro_eli_d1022.html
list $39.99
it looks to be a similar setup, w/ analog sticks for each thumb.
I haven't tried it yet but was thinking of giving it a whirl...
It is hard to imagine how Halo doesn't support them yet, even though they say they are "considering adding it for yet unamed pads..."
Particularly in light of the crippled Command, Option keyboard limitation, it is hard to understand...if they can't fix the keyboard the game pad becomes that much more important. I played the game through on an xbox this summer and really liked the controller, there's alot to be said for dual analog sticks and a handy array of buttons.

Thought I'd revive this thread to see if there was any news about the subject.
