I have a playtation 2 and a 17" Ghz Powerbook. Doubtless the Powerbook can handle Oni but were not there reports of bugs? I know the Playstation would not have that problem but I would like to play Oni where ever I go, not just at home. How dependable was Oni for the Mac? I loved it on the PC.

On OS 9 it was stable as a rock.

On OS X it was buggy to begin with, but the latest version released was very good and just as stable as the OS 9 version.

A great game.

I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

Yeah, only problem I had with Oni on OS X is that going up ramps (not stairs) was very jerky. Not really a big issue.

I love to play it with the slo-mo cheat, good fun

Those cows won't know what hit 'em. They won't know what hit them even after it hits them, because they're cows.

Another vote for Oni from me

I just played it through again recently on a 17" Powerbook under OS X, no problems (just use a mouse instead of the trackpad! )

Glad to see so many loved Oni as much as I did on the PC. Alas, since my 17" is being serviced I may check out the price for the Playstation anyhow. I think it would be interesting to see how it runs on a set top player and with a gamepad. It was one great game and I too would not mind playing thru it again. Thanks for all the replies.

Oh one more thing, any other third person games like Oni out there? I also loved Giants (Fantastic on my Mac) and Jedi Knight Outcast. Don't think I want Tomb Raider, played those enough, but are there any others? Either Mac or PS2???

I really enjoyed Oni, but I liked the sci-fi and anime angles, so I was a bit biased. A lot of the complaints lodged against Oni were legitimate though. The biggest complaint I can remember was that the game seemed rushed. It was like they really fleshed out the first half of the game really well and then just rushed to finish it and ship it on time by not putting a lot of effort and detail into the last half. There's a lot of repetitive fighting in big empty spaces in the later half of the game.

But then again, this is Bungie we're talking about. They did the same thing with Halo. A lot of Xbox users complained that some of the Halo levels seemed empty and rushed, but for most people they didn't care because the game was still so much fun to play. I felt the same way with Oni and liked it but your results may vary.

Maybe Bungie should give us a Marathon 4 and go back to being Mac only? It seems to me that every time they release a title for another platform they get criticized... (unless all that money offsets the criticism! )

Another third-person game you might want to try (shooting, not fighting) would be Max Payne. It should run great on your PowerBook. It even ran acceptably well on my iBook G3/800. That is the game that has Bullet Time and lets you go around with a pistol in each hand John Woo style.

"That's Mama Luigi to you, Mario!" *wheeze*

There was a place in the Mall called the Gamespot where I bought a used PS2 version of the game for $7. "Look" control with the gamepad is very awkward, especially when it comes to aiming. Just doesn't cut it compared to using a mouse which is so quick and precise. Just my opinion.

Love Oni, played it just last week for kicks. Not much replayablity, but one heck of a game in my opinion.
"This is fun, right?"

Yeah, I'm going thru Oni again on the playstation 2. I was surprised at one section where the frame rate was so slow it was unplayable, yet on another day I got thru it OK on a reasonable frame rate. Played Max Payne, which was great, with incredible resolution on my 667 DVI. Wish there were more games like ONI/Payne/Kabuto/OTTOMATIC/etc. Can't get enough of them. Unfortunately 1st person games make me nauseous, like sea sick. So I won't be buying Halo. I get a bit of that feeling too when turning around a lot in 3rd person games.
