Good. Looks like the bitching from everybody about the lack of a Mac version of Uru had some effect.

Myst Uru was to be ported the Macintosh. There was a statement from Ubi-soft two or three months back. Don't know if they backed out on it or what.
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

Sadly, that announcement also came just as they announced the online part was being killed.

Yay! I love the Myst series
(Uru is beautiful, but also the weakest of the 4 main Myst games -- I played it extensively on the PC).
Be happy.

They have got my order!

I hope it is as difficult/challenging as Riven. Myst III was too easy.

The story looks compelling -- it seems that Cirrus' and Achenar's red and blue books have been kept in safe keeping somewhere (watch the trailer). I always got the impression that Atrus destroyed them, but it's entirely possible that he didn't and has been saving them in some kind of hidden age or seomthing, hoping he could maybe redeem them one day. The "girl" that was kidnapped might be Yeesha... perhaps Cirrus and Achenar were somehow freed (maybe by Atrus, who thought maybe they had changed, or maybe by an ignorant adventurer) and kidnapped her, with some scheme to prevent being reimprisoned or something.

Of course, I'm probably 100% wrong. But it's fun to think about!
Be happy.

They changed the logo at the bottom today to say "DVD-ROM". I guess they're avoiding the CD mess of Riven and Exile.

Presto Studios, the people who made Myst 3, dissolved a while ago... their site says they moved on to other things. Did a chunk of them move on to Ubisoft's Montréal studio? 'Caue I thought Myst 3 was very well done, even if it was a little too easy.

Off topic, or tangental at best; did anyone play Rhem? Saw that it was OS 9 with an OS X patch, but was it good or another wannabe pos?

Okay, I imagine several people are going to pick up Myst IV when it ships. I probably will too, even though Myst is very close to (or just is) another tired-ass franchise that is just getting milked for all it's worth.

My question: is this the best game to showcase at the flippin' WWDC? That's it?! That's the newsworthy gaming announcement for the Mac!? Another flippin' Myst game?!

Sure, it looks nice. Yay, you can look around with your mouse... not as much "click 'n' move", wow... revolutionary. And they proudly announce "It's shipping at the same time as the PC version!" Woo-hoo.

Thank God it wasn't a Mac exclusive game that was exciting and groundbreaking. Like a nice free roaming RPG with a nice open structure for plug-ins, and maybe online play. Fortunately it wasn't a financial agreement with an established game developer to create some Mac exclusive properties.

Yah, those things would've made people excited. People would've hurt themselves jumping up and down with excitement. Really is best that we got Myst IV...

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

All real polygons!? That's so impossible with those millions of polygons and lot of effects.

I hope it isn't another 360 degree "QTVR" image

It's the same basic system as Myst 3, but with way more 3D effects tacked on.
Be happy.

Actually, Mac-exclusive online games are not necessarily a good idea, because often there are not enough online Mac game players to stimulate active online game play. This was precisely what caused EverQuest: Macintosh Edition to fail.

Ideally, online Mac games should be shared cross-platform with either a PC or PS2 version, and the servers should be merged. A successful example of a shared PC/PS2 cross-platform MMORPG is Final Fantasy XI Online. In that virtual world, players on both PC and PS2 platforms playing both the American version and the Japanese version across the world play together, creating a shared playing environment with over a million registered players.

So everything's real polygons? I haven't played Myst 3 so I'm not familiar with what kind of engine they're using.

No, everything's pre-rendered except the specials effects (fog, smoke, etc.). You can freely look around, but not freely move.

Frankly, it's better that way; I played Uru on my PC, and the full 3D-ness of it took away from the experience IMO, even if it was drop-dead gorgeous, especially at 1600x1200, 6xFSAA, 4xAF (who cares about framerates in a puzzle game).
Be happy.

I wish you people would stop focusing on Myst IV and be more outraged...

It ruins a perfectly good rant when no one else gets worked up as well!

Yah, I'll pick up Myst IV and play it. Hopefully it's better than III, which was lacking virtually all of the sense of wonder and atmosphere of the original. Be nice if Cyan got more involved.
