Hi:

I just ordered this card (retail version from buy.com) and I'm wondering if people have been annoyed by the fan noise. It looks like there are some replcements out there but the swap/installation seems a little hairy-

Yeah, it's loud.

There are two known fan replacements that work. One is easy to install but expensive, the other is cheaper but more complex to install. Both use up a PCI slot.

I barely hear mine. It's hit or miss, and probably depends on how tolerant you are of noise and where your tower is placed. Most Mac users tend to be a little more picky about noise than most PC users since many are use to the quiet machines Apple has been selling over the last few years. My Quicksilver G4 was loud already and the Radeon 9800 didn't add any new noise.

I bought one for my G5. Unfortunately, it did not come with the 'Y' Power connector that you referred to. And, despite 2 listings on their website and one in their manual which say otherwise, ATI Tech Support claims that they do not and will not provide this cable to me.

That's because the G5 version should not require it. The power is provided via the AGP pro slot.

a2daj, there is no G5 version of the retail Mac Radeon 9800 Pro, unless your talking about the Radeon 9800 Special Mac Edition. The retail Radeon 9800 Pro that wzrdjr is talking about does indeed need a Y Power cable with the G5 as ATI's own instructions say so. In fact on the first page of the instructions it says the cable should have come with it: http://mirror.ati.com/support/infoba...etailed-a.html

Wzrdjr, ask ATI to check their own bloody site!

The G5 edition IS the Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition. It only works in G5s, thus the G5 edition. So yes, there is a G5 edition. It's not 100% clear which one he was talking about. wzrdjr, when you talked to ATI did you specify exactly which model you purchased? Mentioning the G5 may have confused the customer service person. I remember when those G5 install instructions weren't hosted on ATI's site, so I wouldn't be surprised if some folks in customer service didn't know about them.
