I'm interested in downloading some text-based games that I can play inconspicuously at the office (you know, when I'm not working *incredibly hard*...) - so what options do I have? I have tried z-code text based role playing games and they are ok but a bit frustrating. Also tried dope wars and really enjoyed that.
Any other suggestions?
thanks

Zork, the old classic. Hunt the Wumpus, which was always a popular one. Lots of "Z" games out there for free download. Just get an interpreter and go to town.

Or if you've got the BSD subsystem installed, you can play 'dunnet' through emacs from the Terminal .

Some great interactive fiction:
Photopia + Varicella, Adam Cadre.
SoFar + Spider and Web, Andrew Plotkin.
Curses + Jigsaw, Graham Nelson.
Small World, Andew Pontious.
(Note: Some of these devilishly difficult, so stop by at rec.games.int-fiction or rec.arts.int-fiction for hints if -- or when -- you need them.)
You can Google to find any of the above, or go spelunking through the IF Archive.
You can download Zoom to play Z-code games; for TADS games there's a dirty but working carbonized version of MaxTADS here.

Why use your computer for inconspicuous gaming?
I have a Palm because I need to keep track of meetings, deadlines, and other Very Important Things. I think it's Business Critical, even, and my boss agrees. So, when I'm in a meeting and I busily scribble away in my PDA, nobody really knows that I'm playing Dope Wars!
And, on the odd chance that something important gets said, I can press a button to go to the notepad and jot it down, then go back to my other life as a drug kingpin...
Or, if you're really nostalgic for those text adventures, there are a few Palm applications that will run those Infocom-format games like Zork...
