Has anyone been able to make a bootable image from the COD DVD so it doesn't have to be used for game play each time? I've had zero luck-
Thanks

You aren't suppose to be able to make a copy of game CD's or DVD's this is called piracy unless you bought the game CD/DVD and just didn't borrow it from a friend and want to make a back-up copy which under the Law you have the right to do. They use safedisc technology to stop people from making copies. I don't get it how they can use safedisc technology to stop people from making copies but yet under the Law a owner of the software has the right to make a back-up copy but they can't because of the anti-piracy technologies in the CD's and CD/DVD recording software. Doesn't make add up for me.
Why do you need a bootable image???? Or do you mean bootable as in the play CD/DVD. A bootable image is a image that would allow you to create a bootable CD/DVD that your computer would boot instead of the hard drive like a Mac OS X CD for example.
I can understand wanting to use a hard drive image of the CD/DVD instead of having the disc in the CD/DVD drive while playing but there's no legal way around it.
You need the CD in so the game knows that you own a legal copy of the game and that the CD key isn't stolen or cracked.

How do you know Aspyr is using Safedisc? Maybe they just improved the disk check code or Apple's DVD checking code is better than it's CD checking code. I made a backup disk of CoD just fine and I've used it to start up CoD.
madmacgames, I think you may be confusing DVD disks with DVD movies.

Actually, in the USA, under the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) it is illegal to make copies or backups of DVDs. Many, including myself, believe this to be a violation of a person's fair-use rights (like for a CD, it is fair-use to make a copy for backup, use in your car, etc).
As to the original question, I am not sure what you are asking Didsky.

What I was getting confused was the PC version of CoD with the Mac version. I know the PC version uses SafeDisc 3.
Didsky - Were you able to make a image but not be able to run the game from the image? Maybe it checks the hardware DVD drive for the DVD before it plays and the software image won't work. Don't know if that right but that's what I woud guess if you were able to make a image and not be able to play off the image.

you may be correct. I believe the DCMA restrictions on copying DVDs has to do with the enoding/ecryption that DVD movies carry. I've never looked closely at a DVD game to see if it carries the same encryption and restrictions.
But I had no idea what the original poster was asking. It kind of sounded like he meant there movies on the DVD he wanted to rip off so he could watch without having to play the game.

He was asking if anyone was able to make a disk image of CoD and use it to start up CoD. Disk images don't work with CoD. You need to use a physical disk.

You got it- I own COD- it is as amazing as people say it is.
I was hoping to make an image with Toast so that I simply wouldn't have to boot the physical CD each time for play (laziness, don't want it to get scrateched, etc.)
If it's not possible (and i certainly understand why for piracy reasons) no big deal-
I appreciate everyone's input

theoretically speaking, couldn't you just dupe the disc, rather than mount an image?
I bought my own, so it doesn't matter to me.

I mentioned in an earlier message that I already did that (and yes it works fine)

Piracy is stealing something that doesn't belong to you. Making a backup for yourself of something you already paid for so that you don't have to keep disk swapping all the time is NOT PIRACY.
So get off your high horse. It might TECHNICALLY break the license agreement, but please learn to use the words properly.

Discussion of the pros and cons of copy protection can be found in this thread. I realize that cracks can and are used in legal circumstances, but as they circumvent American law, and MacNN being an American forum, I can't allow them to be shared on MacNN property.
