I've played the CoD demo and its amazing. But, is Black Hawk down better? I think I might prefer a more contemporary game but as a very new gamer, I'd like some advice. I'm using a 17" Albook, 1gig proc and 1gig Ram.
Thanks

I think it's just a matter of preference. I think Black Hawk Down looks more interesting to me. I personally feel we've had enough WWII first-person shooter games lately, not to take anything away from CoD, and other forthcoming titles (Battlefield 1942). I haven't seen too many games that let you play with somewhat realistic modern warfare, with the exception of the Tom Clancy games. I imagine either game will work on your machine adequately. I guess my suggestion to you might be just wait to see if a Black Hawk Down demo arrives in a timely fashion, play it, and compare. If not, I'm sure you'll be just as happy with CoD.

Call of Duty has one of the best single player games I've ever seen and it's Multi is pretty good too. It should run very nicely on your powerbook. It run's quite smoothly on my PB 12". If you run into trouble try turning off "dynamic lights on everything"
Black Hawk Down on the other hand run like a pig on my Dual 2.0 G5 with Radeon 9800 SE. I've had to turn the settings down to 1024x768 with everything on normal, instead of high, to get decent framerates. The only other game I've had to do that for before is Halo.
I really doubt you'll get decent performance on your powerbook with BHD.

Black hawk down's play is boring, repetitive, an largely frustrating. I cannot count the number of times I've blown my own guys to pieces because I had no idea who was shooting what, or from where. It is also very slow.
CoD is fun, intense, long, and fairly difficult. Nothing compares to running around during a beach landing whilst 10 stationary guns are trained on you.

Also, keep in mind, when it comes to computer games, you can always get "mods" or "total conversions' as they are sometimes called. This basically takes the engine of the game, but changes everything else... skins, guns, maps, features, etc.... all for FREE.
If you think you'd like modern war better, just get the "Revolt" total conversion mod for Call of Duty, which basically turns CoD into a modern weapons game.
I've converted the mod for the Mac, and you can get it HERE.
(Oh, and Badger, you are missing an "h" in the "http://" section of your signature image... that is why it isn't displaying)

Do NOT buy Black Hawk Down if you have to choose between the two. It's leagues below CoD. It plays like a mediocre Playstation shooter, and bears little resemblance to the actual movie/book. It's a classic example of building a game based on a great marketing concept (hit movie, best selling book), but not following through with a great game in itself.

It's pretty simple. COD is smooth and plays fluidly at maximum settings on my PowerMac G4/1.33GHz/1GB/Radeon 9800, while BHD stutters and skips, even on low settings. Not only that, but COD is more interesting and fun.
There's really no comparison. BHD is a crappy game and a poor porting job, while COD is an awesome game that was ported extremely well.

I like BHD multiplayer. I prefer modern warfare games over WWII games. But as the others have said, CoD is the better overall game. It has a great single player and a pretty good multiplayer mode.

Well I bought both in the end. CoD is far better and performance is way ahead BHD. I'm surprised actually because I really don't see why BHD would need so much more CPU.

Cool, well if you wanna try turning CoD into a modern weapons game, try out the total conversion mod Revolt.
You can get it for the Mac HERE
(If it lags on you, try turning off Wall Marks in the Performance Options menu)
I'll be converting more CoD Mods to the Mac as they are released.

Does this conversion replace the entire game, or is the original gameplay still accessible? Is it for the SP or MP mode?

It is for MP only, and it does NOT replace standard CoD.
It is an addition to the game... a modification...
You will notice in CoD MP there is a "Mods" menu... well, Revolt will show up in that list, you select it and launch it, and it's like you have a whole new game. You can switch back and forth between stock CoD and Revolt very easily. You actually don't even really have to switch to Revolt unless you are hosting your own server. If you are just joining online servers, you can join a Revolt server from stock CoD, and it will load Revolt for you.
To find Revolt servers, look for gametypes that start with "Rev" or maps names that start with "Rev_" or "Lan_"

Cool, thanks for the explanation iMac Man! I shall give it a try. CoD MP is smooth as silk under 10.3.5, I'm really enjoying it.

Yeah, no problem! And, yeah, 10.3.5 brought in new graphic drivers, and those along with the final release of the CoD 1.4 patch, it's running much better!
I got tired of stock CoD MP very quickly. Too many machine gunners running around spraying and praying and being too effective with it. I'm a fan of using rifles and actually learning how to aim and use skill. I LOVE the Iron Sights soooo much!
There are some other great mods out, and even more in the works, so keep your eyes open for more conversions from me.
Good places to keep up to date on CoD Mods are CODFiles.com and FPSCentral.com
If you are a fan of realism, and working in teams, you should check out the mod Heat Of Battle! It's my favorite because you really have to stick with teammates. If you go out like a Rambo running and gunning on your own, you wont last a second. If you want to check it out, follow my post over at their forums to find the download files:
http://hob.mikesmarauders.com/hob_fo...?TOPIC_ID=2784
Or, just wait a few weeks or so until the next version is released and I'll be making a conversion of it.
There is also a blood/gore mod called Merciless. They are getting ready to release a new version which looks quite impressive and takes the mod beyond just adding blood/gore. There will be new classes, guns, and gametypes, among others. But, if you are interested, you can get the current version for the Mac here:

Have fun!

So whats the best place to get CoD? Also, I've recently played CoD: RIsing Sun on Xbox (which was excellent), and after some adjustment, I really liked the Xbox dual analog control style for FPS. Is this available in a USB or firewire connection for my 12" PB?

Rising Sun is Medal Of Honor, not Call of Duty. But, they are kinda similar, and a lot of the MoH team worked on CoD.
Anyway, you can get CoD just about anywhere. I pre-ordered mine from Amazon. I happen to know that someone is selling their used copy over at http://www.MacFPSgames.com
As for analog controllers and computer games... don't even mess with it. They rarely/never work right with FPS games. They work fine for driving games, and stuff like that, but FPS games rarely support gamepads. The keyboard and mouse combo is so much more accurate anyway.
That being said, if you insist, I have a MacAlly iShockII, which even supports force feedback. It sits on my desk collecting dust.... but, it's a good gamepad. Logitech also makes good gamepads.
