Hello, I've had Civ 3 for a year and a half now, and my friend just got it and I'd like to play him in multiplayer, but there is no option for this?
Is there a patch I have to download, or is there some kind of gold edition or something that I need to play multiplayer?

Not yet, I've heard rumors of a Gold Edition that may be in the works but I don't know if it will be like the PC Play the World edition.

Will not happen.
Play the world (aka Pay for Multiplayer expansion) uses Direct Play. It would take considerable effort to allow us macs to talk to windows systems. If anything we *might* get a patch to play among ourselves but since they charged good money for it on the windows side I wouldn't hold my breath.

You know, we had this discussion over at Civfanatics, and it was proven rather conclusively that making enough of the code work for network play between Mac and PC is definitely possible, if someone decided to do it. The problem is not feasibility, it's getting someone to pay for it.

Actually, if they based it on Rendevouz (I know, LAN only then, but better than nothing), the network code would be quite easy to make.
