when using dual monitors on an al powerbook, the secondary (non powerbook) monitor turns black while playing games. does that mean that all the v-ram is dedicated to the powerbook monitor then? i'm assuming the answer is "yes" but i've never seen it discussed before . . .

It means that the game doen't support dual monitors. This happens on my G5. The crazy thing is that its not always the main monitor that stays on. What monitor I use depends on where the games shows up. I haven't had much luck switching screens. Now that I read this I see I didn't help much.
