I'm going to be on a three hour flight soon, and I'm thinking of taking my PowerBook. I'd like to buy a new game to play on the way. I hate it when people peer over my shoulder at my work, so I figure a game is the best way to pass the time (or a movie, but that's easy).

So what games do not involve killing, sex, or anything that shouldn't be shown on an airplane in front of small children (not mine, but others around me)?

I enjoy marble blast

or something a bit more, there is sim city, railroad tycoon just shipped or went gm, tony hawk is also fun as well as airburst, and Nanosaur 2 also Myst IV should have shipped.

Pinball or poker are good games.

I played Myst III on my last international flight with power. Just remember a pen and paper for notes as well.

Ok howabout a moving like Airplane! or that one where the plane survives but the top is missing or something that would give the people next to you a REAL boost in confidence

Ok j/k I'd say something fun.. wolfenstein's a bit old but maybe myst or unreal turnament or something

Civ III, although I doubt you would be able to finish the game in 3 hours.

I would say something simple, such as Tetris or poker or Mah Jong Solitaire. Unlike within the comfort of your home or office, you would clamped within your seat (unless you go on first class ), and your eyes probably will go tired rather quickly than you normally have at home etc.

Play something that a single game would finish within 20 minutes or so, so that your eyes have a break from eye strain, and then play another game.

BTW, don't play games that is too attractive or make a lot of noise, otherwise kids nearby might start asking "May I play this, may I play this, may I play this..."

Shouldn't eb shown on an aeroplane? um, if it's on your laptop screen, I'm of the opinion that you can do whatever you want (legalities permitting).

I watched Road Trip on a transatlantic flight on my Pismo. Sound was on headphones, so I wasn't being disruptive or anything. I felt no guilt

(I'm not entirely insensitive - I wouldn't play a clip of the 11th of September news reports or something. But playing games IMO no-one should be able to tell you not to... no-one's forcing the people around you to watch what you're doing!)

I could easily get sucked into WarCraft III enough to not even notice I'm on a flight, and the violence isn't THAT bad on it. I'd wear headphones if I were you (no matter what you're playing).

Yes, headphones will be used. I'm leaning toward Railroad Tycoon 3.

I really don't want any violence in the game - I have small kids at home, and I might play it there too. I wonder if my local Apple store has a copy.

Now here's the hard part - given that my trip is still about a month away, if I buy it now and start playing it now, will I lose interest by next month?

Someone tell me more about Myst. The reviews are positive, but I can't figure out what type of game it is.

the most frustrating fun you can have but you need some serious hardware acceleration to keep it from "frame tracking" too much to play.

walk around - find clues - solve puzzles walk around more - solve puzzles - walk around more - repeat for 30 hours find out that the second puzzle was solved incorrectly - throw laptop from plane... ugly series - I mean beautiful series

RR3 remember if it is anything like RR2 - there is just too much gameplay between single senerios and storybook versions. It is a no miss choice - unless of course you don't like kind of game.

SOF 2. If they can`t handle it - screw them.
For the Pacifist in you I´d recommend:
Solitaire, Freecell and Pocket Tanks.

I second Civ III, it's turned based so you can stop for the meal, don't have to concentrate constantly, etc.

I don't doubt that the good games require some "fun" (i.e. guns, girls, or guts). I'm having a hard time because I want something I'm not ashamed to let my kids play.

I'm downloading the demo to Myst. I'll see how that runs on my 1.33 GHz PowerBook. I'm sure it will work perfectly on my G5, but that's a little to big to take on the plane.

My wife would also like to find out what people suggest, so maybe I'll find something for her too!

Angband.

You might be ashamed to let your kids play it... but only if you are worried your kids will turn into dorks.

Yes, there is killing. No, it isn't graphic... unless you count an "@" sitting next to a "k" for 3 seconds before the "k" disappears graphic....

Airburst is great. card games are good, unless you are worried about getting people hooked on gambling. If you've got some SNES or NES games you like, you can use an emulator to play them on the flight. Enigmo is good, but I bore of it quickly... couldn't see getting more than the demo.

And of course... Escape Velocity. At its most violent, it is space combat (spaceship fires missile, spaceship blows up... you can pretend they are piloted by drones, if you must). At the least violent, it's purely a trading game. Great fun, well worth the $$$. Don't download it now, though... download it closer to the flight. 30 day demo

We took our ibook on our last plane trip, it really made the flight pleasnt. My daughter used it for most of the ride. Tony Hawk 4 came with it and that was great. As controversial as it is we played Mame a lot on the trip, just keep throwing in those virtual quarters in. What was nice about Mame is you just need a game pad, if you want you can use the keyboard.

My 2 cents

Or you could try Oolite - that`s Elite for the Mac.
You can upgrade your ship by trading - or fire up Text Editor and equip your ship there.

everything by Ambrosia Software.

the old stuff was great and the new is overthetop... might seem silly to spend $30 for shareware but the EV series are amazing.

There are better Mahjong games than AKI but certainly ASW only makes gameplay.

Took my Toast image of Battlefield 1942 on my 1.33GHz 12" (with 10.3.5!) andit was great. Coach is rough for mousing games, but damn it's cool!

Enjoy
