New ATI updates.
ATI Displays 4.4
Allows for 3D Override support for ALL Radeon cards (including OEM)
http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/m...plays-4-4.html
ROM update to allow for support of some features in ATI Displays, like VersaVision on Radeon 8500 and 9000 retail cards.
http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/m...msept2004.html
Note: these do not install new graphics drivers for ATI cards so do not expect any performance differences unless you enable various 3D Override options.
Here's Bruno from ATI's desc he posted in AYM:
"The new ATI Displays has just been posted to the driver download pages of all RADEON products, both in Panther and Jaguar sections. This new version adds new features to all RADEON products, both retail and OEM. 3D Overrides are now supported on all RADEON chipsets: Retail, BTO/CTO, Built-In and Mobile. Some new features (for retail) require a ROM Update. The new Mac2TV controls now work on all cards equipped with TV out support - this includes the Apple-supplied 9800 and 9600 cards when used with the Apple G5 Video Output adapter.
A new ROM update package has also just been released for all RETAIL RADEON products. This single installer will update all Built-By-ATI Retail RADEON card products to support the latest features exposed in ATI Displays. They also add support for a wider variety of LCD products and for some boards fix incompatibilities that had previously been reported, along with an assortment of bug fixes. Notable highlights: VERSAVISION display rotation for RADEON 8500 and 9000.

Versavision for the 8500 was a pleasant surprise.
ATI support is becoming great.
The 8500 was a great purchase...I don't regret replacing the GeForce 2MX by this baby.

You get access to the 3D Override support without resorting to a hack.

Is it a Built-By-ATI card or a 3rd party card?
I had been using a flashed Radeon 8500 64MB by ATI and it was perfect.

It's a Sapphire. Halo's really the only one that's been giving me trouble, but I haven't had much time to check others out. Even Carmageddon 2 looks great (except for the menus) in Classic with 3DfxGlideLib.
EDIT: old ROM was 126, now updated nicely to 227

Check out the release notes (link available from the Displays link in the first post). It has the answer to your question and possibly ones you haven't thought of..

I'm very happy ATI updated this to work on the OEM laptop chips. Works well on my PowerBook with Radeon9600; now I can fix all those games which refuse to offer a VBL sync option.

Wow, nice job ATI Mac team. The controls are uncluttered, and work automaticially when you run a game. No need to manually set a profile.
Go brag about that to the PC side folks who just released that hideous .net monstrosity that still can't automaticially set a profile when I launch a game.

Well, FSAA Super slows down the Command and Conquer Generals demo considerably, but the other options work very well when FSAA is disabled! I'll have to try Call of Duty with it later.

That's an unfortunate side effect of Supersampling AA. While it's arguably a better looking technique (it can help reduce the impact of the Moire effect on textures) than Multisampling AA it's a tremendous bandwidth hog. Newer Radeon cards can use Multisampling AA which uses less bandwidth (typically only affects the edges of polygons rather than the entire image) and thus allows 6xFSAA up to 1600x1200 (and maybe higher resolutions).

Thanks for the tech info. It didn't hinder Call of Duty nearly as much as the demo for CnC.
