Ryan Gordon posted various bits of news regarding UT2K4 for Linux and Mac OS X.
http://icculus.org/news/news.php?id=2192

A new version of the demo (presumably without the sound bug, finally ) has been released

An OS X specific installer has been made for the ECE Bonus Pack.

Stupid question here...

I forget where I got my older copy of the buggy demo. However, I can't find a new mac demo at the unreal site. The linux demo isn't the mac demo too is it? Anyway, thanks... sorry for the stupid ? If anyone could provide me with a link that would be great!

Original Mac demo here. Don't get it, you already have it, and they did not release a patch.

The new demo can be downloaded from this page.

Downloaded and it doesn't unarchive. The final size was 169,862,358 bytes...is this right? I might have a corrupt download but this hasn't happened to me in years.

edit: damn...never mind...it's supposed to be 268MB. I only got two thirds of it. Yet Safari shows it as a complete download and so does the desktop.

edit2: what a PITA...third time's a charm...else **** it.

edit3: any kind soul want to just send it to me via iChat? every time I restart the download, the transfer speed get slower and slower.

edit4: there are obviously some big problems with their servers...anyone actually manage to get the whole thing? Someone wake me when there are at least 6 mirrors for this thing.

Heh.. It took forever to download for me, but it got there finally. I was thinking about finding a mirror to upload it to, but it's going to take all night on my ADSL unfortunately.

Thanks for the help guys. I dont' know why there wasn't a link on the official UT site (unless I was missing it... could only find linux and win). Anyway, downloading it right now in the dorm... should be done in a little bit (under an hr).

@Horsepoo!!! - if you still can't get it let me know (assuming my dl works) and I'll get it to you.

Instead of using your browser for a big download, use a Terminal utility.

wget -c http://url.of.file
... and the file will be downloaded to your home folder.

In case you are one of those poor people with the default OSX install that doesn't have wget included, try:

curl -C - http://url.of.file -o "demofile.zip"
... this will save the file in your home folder as "demofile.zip" or whatever else you specify in the download command.

In either case, the commands specify that downloads should be continued from where they left off. So if the connection drops, give the command again. It will restart from where it left off (unless the server in question is using weird settings and not allowing a resume command).

Okay here's a stupid question, but what sort of performance should I be looking at getting while playing UT2k4. I'm spoiled because I have this for my pc (see sig) and it plays smooth as glass on my 19" 1280x1024 LCD with all the video options turned up and 4x filtering turned on. I'm currently trying to play the demo (the new one) on my powerbook (again see sig) at the native resolution with all the details turned to their lowest settings and I still have a ton of lag. Has anyone played this that can confirm that the performance is better. It seems slightly better than the last demo I played; however, not great by any means. One would think that with a 9700 w/ 128mb vram, a 1.5ghz G4, and 1.25gb of ram the game would play decently. However, the horiable frame rates make me sick after playing for a few min. Also, I'm on an increadably fast dorm connection here at penn state (as I was last year), so I'm pretty confident that it's not the internet. On another note I tried playing just a game with bots, and it was equally as slow and crappy. I was hoping w/ this sort of hardware I'd be able to play at the native resolution (wide screen) with atleast a moderate amount of details. If this isn't the case I can't say that I want to purchase the game for my mac (like I was planning on doing).

Laptop/notebook computers for gaming is pretty much a no-no. Comparing a Mobility card to a desktop card can't be done either.

Although I can't understand why you would be getting such awful framerates. How bad is it?

On my 3 1/2 year old Dual 800 G4 with Radeon 8500, I'm getting 25-35 fps on most demo maps with all the details on high (no filtering though). Yeah, it sucks, but it's playable...and my setup is ancient for gaming.

Set Processor performnace to highest (under system prefs-energy settings) and open your UT2004.ini file and change the "Var" size value to at least 64 (mabe even try 128 if 64 works ok) and then play the game.

The var size thing really seemed to help... tried both 64 and 128 (from 32) and 128 was the best. What exactly is this that I'm setting here anyway?

It's still not as great as I would like it to be... but certainly much more playable.

Also, I obviously know that you can't compare desktop to laptop and that laptops aren't made for gaming. However, since apple seems to think that the game runs well on these machines it should! And now it runs much better and very acceptably I might add!

Thanks all!
