I'm getting a new 2x2.5GHz (6800 Ultra, 2GB) , and it's due to arrive in a couple of days. What games should I get? I really haven't played many games on my mac in the last couple of years, so I'm looking for a modern game that will really show off my new machine. I am thinking of Halo, but any of the WWII shooters are interesting as well.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

sound like your into shooters...

for shooters I would recommend halo(as mentioned), unreal tournament 2004, Doom 3 when it comes out, possibly halo 2 when it comes out(to be honest I was rather disapointed with it when compared to the original) and don't forget there are other genres.

Call of Duty is one of the best mission-based shooters to come around in a long time (World War 2 themed, by the way). It sucks you right in, and looks great when run at 1600x1200 res, which your Mac can handle with aplomb.

Besides shooters already mentioned in this thread, consider Command and Conquer: Generals, which is a real time strategy game (ala Warcraft). It looks amazing (tons of smoke, fire & explosion effects, debris, etc.), and sings on a dual 2.5 Ghz G5 with the nvidia card (I've got the same system as you). I used to play C&C:Generals on my old 2.0Ghz Dual G5 with ATI 9800, but even then encountered slow downs during heavy action. Not so with the new 2.5GHz G5!

Enjoy....

If you like real time strategy, try Homeworld 2. It is by far the best rts game out there. Otherwise, Call of Duty, Unreal 2004, and Halo are probably the best FPS games. Battlefield 1942 is a great online multiplayer game, but until the Desert Combat Final mod is working for macs, it is not as fun to play.

Halo, Call of Duty, and Unreal Tournament 2004 should all run really well on that computer. Those are a few good shooters although there are many more. For other genres, there are a number of options... Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic just came out for Mac and it's a really fun RPG. If you want real-time strategy, you might want to shy away from C&C Generals because the online play is Mac-to-Mac and PC-to-PC only, no cross platform compatibility. It also doesn't run very well on Macs, so if you do try playing online against a bunch of Mac users with lesser machines, they'll slow down your computer. A better option is Warcraft 3, IMHO, because Blizzard is awesome and Battle.net rocks. It's not perfect, but it runs well on anything with at least 64 MB of VRAM, and the online system is pretty good.

You might want to consider the new GeForce 6800GT that Apple's offering. It's not quite as fast as the 6800 Ultra, but it's very close (probably within 10%). Also, it's $100 cheaper and available sooner, with less waiting. You can use the $100 you save to buy some games.

6800 Ultra is in stock at some Apple stores. I called to check availability (on a whim) and ended up bringing home a 6800 Ultra and a 30" display. That was on 11-5-04. And the salesperson said that they would sell the 6800 Ultra seperately as well.

I would go for Unreal 2004....1942 rocks. I'm playing it now in 1680 X 1050 and it looks beautiful....

Good luck and enjoy!
