I recently decided to try out World of Warcraft for my G5. Since it's one of the first major MMORPG's readily available for the Mac upon it's launch I figured I would help out the Mac Gaming Community by buying a copy and trying it out. Let it be known that this is nowhere near my kind of gaming genre. I am more of a console sports gamer. As soon as I had it loaded I was hooked. It's not the overhead view of little mongrels running around cutting down wood and fighting. WOW is so breathtaking and non-linear I had to try and enlighten some of my friends as well as those in the MacNN Forums. (I know there's already a few WOW forums) Basically, me describing it does it no justice so do yourselves a favor and log onto the World of Warcraft.

I have WoW but I play it on Lightbringer on Pacific with my buddies. I would of like to join MacNN but since you guys are not on the same servers as my buddies, I stuck with them & plus you guys are alliance. They decide on Horde. I play Wow on my PC (dual 1 Ghz, 1gb Ram, 40gb HDD, ATI 9200SE 128mb) & it runs sweet. I havent tried it on my PB 12" since its in for repair but will install it when i get my PB back.
I love this game. the graphics are awesome & the quest system rock. I gained most of my lvls from questing. a must have for all Mac gamers: casual & powergamers.
Lvl 14 Undead Mage
on quest:
since I'm rarely ever in a city, i get as many quest as possible so that way i can finish as many as I can in one time. some quest you have to finish the 1st one to get the next one but most of the time, I'm able to get atleast 2 quest per person.

I agree, it's definitely a must have but only if you can spend at least several hours per week on it. If you can't play more often I don't think there are many people who would find the $15/month fee worthwhile. MMO really haven't been my thing in the past, either, but once I played this game in the Open Beta I was immediately hooked. And now I'm waiting for my game to arrive in the mail (should be here tomorrow!).
Definitely a worthwhile buy. Also, to point out, World of Warcraft recieved a 9.5 from Gamespot.com - I have yet to see them rank ANY PC game higher than a 9.5 There are a few others that they gave 9.5 to, but very very few.

There is indeed one game that has ranked higher than WoW on that site.

The Dogcows has both Alliance and Horde representation...
Alliance PvE is on Whisperwind Server, and Horde PvP, Frostwolf...
The url is www.dogcows.net if anyone ever wants any more info!

I've tried a couple of MMORPGs b/c I liked the concept, but the execution never lived up to my expectations. Then I was kindly added to the closed beta for WoW and was hooked. This game is truly a lot of fun to play. Leveling is consistent, but not too easy, with the quest system. There are a variety of quest types to fit your particular style of play (I hate grinding quests for example [kill x number of this foe and I'll give you something]) so you're never bored.
And the Dogcows are a great guild. Everyone is very friendly and supportive in your attempts to level, complete quests or just vent about the bloody Murlocs. I think that was one of the key enjoyments about WoW - having a team to play with. You know you're teaming with quality people as opposed to a random, luck of the draw type of group.
Buy it today. MOOF! Plus, we're gaining fame and noteriety every day: Apple Feature (scroll down to the bottom).

From my experience, any computer that meets or exceeds specs will be happy running WoW. I ran the beta on a 1.2 gig iBook, and it was smooth as silk. I also ran it off an external FW drive, which allowed me to try it on a G5 Power Mac 1.8 dualie (nice), as well as an iMac 600 g3 with a 16 mb vid card. It stuttered and sputtered on the iMac, but it ran, and well enough for me to create a gnome and get him up to level 5.
In short, no worries if you're a member of the 1 gig or better club.

And if you're a member of the 'almost at 1 GHz, but have a lot of RAM' club, you should also be able to play it. It plays relatively well on my Powerbook 867.

OK, you guys just about have me convinced. I'm a long-time strategy gamer, more into thinking than clicking, who has never played an MMORPG. Will I just end up as fodder for preadolescent muggers? Or can I actually enjoy the game without having to fight for my pathetic life every five minutes? (I get enough of that at the office, thank you.)
I'm guessing the Mac crowd is a bit more civilized than the PC folks, so give it to me straight. Can an on-line novice with a sleepy trigger finger survive and prosper in the World of Warcraft?

yep, I think I'm also convinced to buy me a copy and try it out. Hopefully it doesn't suck the life out of me. MMORPGs can do that to ya.

Reasonably well. Expect 40+ indoors, 25 out, and dropping to 10 in areas with a lot of people (spawn points for instance).

Definitely. Blizzard has divided the servers into Player vs. Player and Player vs. Environment. If you never want to battle it out with a teenager, you never have to. Just choose the PvE server and you're only battling the bad guys Blizzard created, not the annoying ones on the 'net.

You should have no trouble. As -Q- stated, you can join a PvE server and never have to deal with PvP. Not to say that you can easily take your time in battle and come out in good shape, though. You need to be aware of your surroundings, but you don't have to be able to fire off a hit immediately or the moment you're able to. Also, depending on the class you choose you will have to use some strategy in-battle, as well. I think less so for warriors and such, and more so for casters like mages and priests. All in all, I can't think of a single type of gamer who this game wouldn't be good for, except the ones who don't have the time for it (I'd say at the very least several hours per week).

If they continue to develop content for the game - i.e. new goods, areas, quests, etc. Then it most likely will be worth it.
I am going to buy the game and start playing over my winter break - 7 days and counting.

I think that if you can afford it, it's worth it. I find the game more than enough fun to justify paying $15/month, and as in any MMOG, they will continue to develop the game and add content. If paying $15/month makes your head spin then maybe you should stay away from this game - after all, if you start playing, I doubt you'll be able to stop ;-)

It's $15 a month if you pay monthly. I paid for 6 months @ $13 a month, which works out to about $0.44 a day. I play about 15 hours a week, so that's about $0.20 per hour of play, which is about the cheapest entertainment I know of.

It's money better spent than cable TV. I watch one, maybe two shows a week. With WoW, I spend several hours playing a week.

Speaking of WoW and Macs, did anyone else notice that Reservoir Dogcows (and a few other Mac guilds) got a nice plug from Apple on their WoW game feature pages ?

Dare I even try on a dual 800 with a Radeon 9000? Probably not. Though if I had a better setup, I'd pick up the game for sure and pay for a few months to try it out.

I have an iBook/900 (Radeon 7500), and it's slow, but semi-playable on there with everything turned off. I don't generally quest on it, but it's good enough for moving around between cities.

iBook 933Mhz 14" with half gig of RAM will be playable then? When I say playable, I mean doesn't sputter so much that actual physical headaches are created by excessive anticipation for next frame, and the next frame of animation, and the next.

Forget it. My iBook is a G3/900 with 640MB RAM. With my config file hand tweaked to turn down everything as far as possible, and to turn off everything that can be turned off, I get 5-25 fps. I use the iBook to chat and travel between zones, but I never fight mobs with it since dropping down to 5fps could easily mean death to me and my party.
I suspect one of those new 1.2 GHz G4 iBooks for $899 would play it just fine, but I have to find a person to buy my old one first. Hopefully with the RAM upgrade I might be able to get $600 - $700 for it (I had an offer of $600 but with the RAM that seems a bit low).

Aha. Yeah, I would think a new iBook would do fine but I would only want the 12" 1.2 and it's about $NZ2000, really not reflecting the current exchange rate! I'm not sure how much I could get for mine but I can see people having trouble getting $NZ1500 for G4 iBooks on a local trading website.

You're looking at a driver bug; NVIDIA has identified a fix that should make it into a driver future update (though not necessarily the very next one you see). We may also have a workaround for that one in the WoW code.

It is so coincidental that today a few friends of mine recommended WoW to me, and I find this thread at the top.
Anyway, I was wondering how well this would play on a 2nd gen eMac (G4 1Ghz, 256MB RAM, ATI Radeon 9200(I believe)). I figure that a RAM upgrade might be in order, which is fine since I've been planning to add 512 for a few months now, for a grand total of 768MB.
I also have a PC which almost definately will play it fine (P4 1.8Ghz, 256MB RAM, nVidia GeForce FX 5200 128MB), it just happens that the Mac is in my room (giving me more play time).
Thanks!

I think you'd be fine with that machine. I have a friend with a 1Ghz Quicksilver G4 and he plays with no issues.

I am loving this game. I am a Tauren Shaman on the llane server. I played UO for about 6 years, but closed down when I went all Mac. This game is great, with all of the fun of a Blizzard game in a mplayer setting. I love the style, the look, and the gameplay.
I am playing on a dual 1ghz quicksilver with the standard ATI 64mb card and 1gb of ram. Game runs like a champ. I have seen some very slight slowdowns in Thunderbluff, but nothing major. I highly recommend this to all Mac gaming fans.

Just curious, but how do you farm scarlet monestary? Just get in every group you can?
I just got through SM this evening with some friends. The only good drops I saw were fromt he 4 bosses in there.
Maybe I need to give it a few more go-rounds?

First of all, I'd like to say "Congrats!" to the DogCows for becoming a really great guild, and getting a nod from Apple. How cool is that? I am a former memeber, now playing on a different server, but still hold a special place in my Troll heart for the DogCows.
And I also would recommend this to just about anyone who enjoys gaming. And as Mac owners we know that great high quality games don't come along too often. Blizzard has blessed us once again. This is truly one of the all time greatest Mac games.
I am an admitted addict, and show no signs of scaling my habit down. I hope to see the DogCows out there somewhere someday. A hearty "Moof!" to you all!

I play on a 900MHz G3, with 640 MB RAM.
It's playable, for sure; but sometimes you need to be patient. The only time I've literally been *unable* to play, was in the very first part of Stratholme. I had to leave the area, because the system couldn't handle it. Also, very large-scale PvP battles are a bit strenuous.
I need to build a PC to play it.
