Quick question...

The iMac is obviously widescreen but most games arnt...

1) If the game is not widescreen, do you just get boarders down the left and right??
2) If yes to the above, Can you play in windowed mode instead so you dont have to look at the black borders??
3) Which games you know of ARE widescreen, as when i get the machine i wanna do a little showing off - hehehe
MacBook • 13.3" MacBook Aluminum Unibody, 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB, 250GB
iMac G5 • 20" iMac G5, 1.8GHz, 1GB, 160GB, SD, AP, BT/KB/MS
iPod Mini • Silver, 4GB
iPhone 3G • Black, 16GB

I can only really provide an answer to #2, and that is: IME, whether or not a game has a windowed mode or not seems to depend on the game. A great many seem to, though.

Call of Duty can go widescreen. That is the only one I am sure of.

Unreal Tournament 2004 is wide capable, I play 1920x1200 exclusively in it. Almost any game based on the Quake 3 engine is capable of wide - COD is one - MOHAA is another etc. Most just require a simple edit of the config file to make them play whatever resolution is supported by your Mac. Halo supports wide as well.

It has the wide-screen reses available in the video menu. Nothing to hack in Halo - they are built in

Does it automatically adjust the FOV?
Be happy.

Funny thing - I just took some screen caps at 1920x1200 and 1600x1200 to check the FOV and noticed something odd. Halo not only DOESN'T adjust FOV but it does the real lazy thing, to me it seems that way, and cuts the top and bottom of the images off! So in effect you see less. The HUD elements are stretched it seems in wide aspect as seen in the cross hair and radar but the rendered scene is just cut top and bottom to make it fit the wide aspect ratios.

Here are some pix- sorry they may be a bit large though

Some do, some don't.

Anything based on the Quake3 engine will. You can manually specify your iMac screen resolution and it will do this for you.

So, games such as Call of Duty. Medal of Honour. Star Trek.

Warcraft3 has all the video options under the sun actually within the game options so you don't have to mess about.

Neverwinter Nights will support widescreen and you can adjust that within the game.

Age of Mythology supports widescreen, again available from within the game.

If you play a game at 1024x786 you will get borders down the side, but it's no big issue. You tend to ignore it once you start gaming.

I'm running my PB15 on the new 20" Apple display and Warcraft3 looks GORGEOUS.

I'm sure it'll look equally good on the iMac display and will run at a decent speed. It used to run well enough on the iMac 17" 800 with the special effects toned down.

I am using the default 1440x900 resolution, as for framerate I haven't scientifically tested it but as I said before it runs smoothly. It seems that with the latest apple patch that my framerate has improved slightly...but things like that are also dependant on realm congestion (server) and your internet connection.
