Recently, I have been playing
Vega Trek, an open-source project-based 3D "
Star Trek"-style space combat simulator. Although the controls are somewhat difficult to master at first, it becomes very addictive afterwards.
The Confed and the Aera are at war. You are in control of the
U.S.S. Venture, an Akira-class Confed Federation-style starship. Your ship will fight a variety of Aera starships, Federation-, Klingon-, and Romulan-style; in addition, you will also be supported by a variety of other Confed starships, also of the same styles.
It is important to realize that while your Akira-style starship is armed with both phasers and photon torpedoes, you have three separate phaser firing banks: forward, starboard, and port. These all fire and recharge separately. In particular, some classes of starships (most notably the Defiant class) move too quickly to be able to be destroyed by only the torpedoes and forward phaser banks, so it is important to use the side banks as well. Also, it is useful to warp out of the way of incoming photon torpedoes.
Also, your scanners can detect the state of most enemy shields, it cannot detect the state of the Intrepid class. However, it is still possible to destroy an enemy Intrepid class starship by firing at it enough times with both photon torpedoes and all three phaser firing banks.
The graphics are very beautiful and immersive in this simulation. Both phasers and photon torpedoes look just like those in the "
Star Trek: The Next Generation" television series.
System requirements were not listed, but it performed well on my
PowerBook G4 17-inch [Rev. A], running
Mac OS X 10.2.6 Jaguar and equipped with
512 MB RAM.
To install, visit the
download page and download "
VegaTrek0.2.0.dmg."
Happy Trekking!
