I know this has been covered before but it's still astounds me that Doom may not play well on my computer, a rev c G4 PowerBook 17 with 1.5GB of ram!

Who knows. I'm pretty sure they're just covering their butts from a million angry it-runs-like-poo-on-my-cube customers. We'll see.

It's on the first page of version tracker. Don't remember name off-hand.

Keep in mind it says right on Aspyr's site that those are preliminary specs... and they may very well change as the release gets closer.

I would think they would shoot high at first, and as they optimize it will bring the system requirements down (possibly).

Maybe it goes the other way... who knows?

I'm quite certain that Doom 3 is going to run jus' fine on my PowerMac, but I've sunk an idiotic amount of money into a video card. For me, this is what kills computer gaming, the newest niftiest game always pushes the envelope graphically, and then quickly becomes yesterday's news. Computer gaming seems to be for the rich or foolish.
Look at it this way: Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra= $600. Xbox+PS2+Gamecube+3 new games (1 for each)= about $600. Is it just me, or are game designers limiting their sales by their need to have the flashiest graphics? How about putting some of that effort into gameplay instead, and produce a more enjoyable game with a larger market?

Yah, I'll stop ranting.

That's why it's better to buy an XBOX when Doom3 comes out.

I rarely do PC gaming anymore, like you said it's too expensive and your equipment feels outdated really fast.

Yah, I know. I have an Xbox kicking around. The Xbox is nice an all that, and there are a plethora of good games on it... but some games belong on computers, and computer games many times have the edge in graphics. Kotor on the box didn't look as spiffy as kotor on a 6800 ultra & 30" display. I suspect the same will be true of Doom 3. I eschewed computer gaming for many years in favor of consoles. Even when I got my G5 I still didn't play much in the way of games. Then I got sucked back in.

They're not limiting their sales. It's a conspiracy to push people into replacing their machines fasters. Office has never made somebody purchase a new machine, but many a game title has.

That's like asking people to be attracted to a person's personality over their appearance.

Uh, that's because gaming systems get outdated fast, but STAY outdated.

Do you realize how outdated the hardware in an XBOX is now!?

Console games will never be as up to date as computer games. And, you don't have to keep your computer up to date to play all the new games... just play them on lower settings, and they'll still look better than the console.

I also think TVs/Consoles only display at like 800x600 resolution.

I think consoles just calm people down because it's like, oh well, it's outdated, but so is everyone else, so I don't feel like I'm falling behind and don't have the top of the line equipment, which is all just ego-garbage anyway.

How about looking at it this way:

Xbox -- released Nov. 15th 2001 cost approx $300 - $400 (can be bought now for $150)
iMac G4 700MHz -- released January 7th, 2002 cost $1299 - $1499

Which one will be able to play Doom 3 first? As a matter of fact not one iMac except the newest G5 will be able to play it. Most PowerMacs up to the G5 will not be able to play it. At least with the Xbox you don't have to upgrade or buy a new system to play the newest games. Upgrading or buying a new system would cost a heck of a lot more than just buying the outdated Xbox.

A new Mac capable of running Doom 3 will run a person at least $1299.

Should run fine as long as you have around a 9600 class video card. Pixel shaders are a must to get the most out of the game, same with video memory and system memory. I was able to play at 1024x768 ultra on my PC which is a 9600XT 128mb and an Athlon 1600+ with 1gig of ram, so cpu power is about equal to a 1.4 G4. Macs seem to need to like lots more ram so 1 gig or more should be fine. I've seen it run on much less capable hardware so I don't see any reason why it should run poorly on a decent mac with an ok video card. Video memory is important to this game and so is gpu power so those 64mb 9000 pros are going to be chugging along. A 128mb 9600 on a 1Ghz+ G4 with a decent amount of ram shouldn't have much trouble I'm thinking.

I'm in as well, though I'm curious to see what resolutions it supports. At any rate, it should look quite nifty with a 6800 Ultra on a 30" display!
