I have found the cause of the system mouse pointer showing in games when it's not supposed to.

The cause is the Divx 5.2 QuickTime codec!

Simply remove the "Divx.component" from this folder: Library/QuickTime

Thanks to petterf and the guys over at Macologist.org for tracking down this annoying little bug!

Bingo! Great job! I installed Q2/Q3/UT this week on my Powerbook and discovered this annoying bug. Removing the Divx component fixed it for all the games!

Glad to it hear it worked for you too!

I've been in contact with DivX about this bug... we'll see if they can fix it.

I've also run into this while developing games.

So, for any software developers who read this, the work around is to call QT's EnterMovies() once during your init. Even if you don't use any other QT functionality, this will fix the problem.

Thanks for the info arekkusu!!

Us over at Macologist.org have been considering making up some sort of press release about this bug, and we will definitely add your information, if you don't mind....

When giving credit, should I use the name "arekkusu" or do you have a company name, or what?

It doesnt.. In fact I never even experienced this bug until I got 10.4, with QT 7.
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

Same here, running 10.3.9 and installed QT7, no more pointer bug. But also divx files no longer play.... trade off I guess....

Err, well i'd guess you guys no longer have the divx plug in installed after your upgrades? This is what causes the pointer bug after all. Divx files still play fine for me, but then it is still installed, and I do still have the pointer bug.

Create a new User for gaming.

Install the DivX plugin into your main User's home folder, instead of the system-wide folder.

That way, when you game on your gaming User, it wont have the stuck cursor issue.

Woha, who would've thought?

The only reason I don't have any QT plug-installed right now, is because my standard plug-in setup didn't work that well in 10.4/QT7. This however is another reason to stick with <3 VLC <3 for now. Good work tracking that annoying bug down.

Sniffer gone old-school sig
