Griffin Technology's upcoming FireWave external FireWire 5.1 soundcard/Dolby Digital decoder might be just the thing PowerBook and iBook gamers have been waiting for.

"Dolby Digital™ processors to bring Surround Sound to Macs for gaming, DVD players and iTunes.

...FireWave is a must-have for gamers and DVD enthusiasts. With FireWave's support for OpenAL, the cross-platform 3D audio standard, games like World of Warcraft and Unreal Tournament 2004 will come alive in a way you've never heard before."

I'll buy one and post a review. OpenAL support should make the PowerBook gaming experience better for those with 5.1 speaker systems.

I've asked M-Audio if they are gong to upgrade the Sonica Theater drivers to include Open AL support like their Revolution 5.1 and 7.1 PCI soundcards do, but nothing yet. Was looking at the Creative DDTS-100 but besides being fugly it doesn't support OpenAL either.
