I'm living in Australia and am trying to internet play a game of scrabble against my mother who is in the USA. We are both behind routers (mine is airport express, hers is a netgear).
I used the port # provided by the Scrabble software makers to set up port forwarding in the Airport Admin Utility. The public port & private port is the port number for the scrabble game, and the private IP address is 10.0.1.201.
On my scrabble playing host computer's System Preferences I have the Airport location as "static." The Configure IPv4 set "Manually." IP Address- 10.0.1.201, Subnet Mask- 255.255.255.0, Router- 10.0.1.1, and DNS Servers- 10.0.1.1.
With these settings I can connect to internet. However I've been unable to host the scrabble game (Have tried both built in scrabble method where my mom types in the my IP address [the one listed in the Airport Express] or by using Gameranger).
I really don't know much about networking but I've noticed that my server lists different DNS numbers on their web site (Bigpond.com.au). Should I try typing these numbers in the system preferences instead of the 10.0.1.1 that is typed there? Also in the Aiport Admin utility there is a place for DNS Servers numbers that is currently blank. Should I type in the providers DNS numbers in these spaces?
Also, the Airport Admin Utility tells me to download a newer version (current is 6.1). I've always been inclined to never update something that is working fine. Could the update help me fix this problem?
Also in the Airport Admin Utility the Subnet Mask has a greyed out address of 255.255.255.255. Should I change the subnet mask of my system preferences to match this (it currently is 255.255.255.0)?
Thanks for any help,
lw
