Marathon Aleph One. Bungie has released all the old games. This is super-fun, and Internet network play is supposed to be working (haven't tried it myself).

The newest versions of Aleph One actually require OS X, so maybe Internet play won't work for you. But there is an older Aleph One version. Or you can play the games Bungie released (they released both the data files and the applications).

It's a CD of their old games but they are not registered versions. You would still have to pay for a license code for everything you wanted.
Genius. You know who.

I second Aleph One. It truely is free, undergoing development (albeit slow development), and internet play does work. AIM chatroom "Aleph One" to try and find a game. The only confusion there might be is what version to use. While a couple of developers strongly recommend the last stable build (1/18) everyone seems to ignore them and use the nightly builds. Ask about the build and game settings to use (infinity, etc.) before joining someone's game.
Genius. You know who.

It's apparently for people on 56k who are intimidated by the concept of overnight downloads.
