Morning,
I recently installed the sims 2 and I have been pretty pleased with it's performance, however I have downloaded two third party skins that were originally in the .rar format. I unpacked them, and tried to install them using the package installer in the sims 2 directory. When I double clicked on the package files I had to choose the app;ication to open them with, I picked the package installer and it launched, but didn't seem to do anything.
Has anyone been able to install any third party .packages in the sims 2, thanks.
M

Can you post a link to a sims 2 package you can't get to install correctly?
Thanks,

I bought my copy of the Sims 2 on June 10th from the Apple store.
To install .package files in the game, you just need to drag them into ~/Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2/Downloads.
There is more info here on installing the different custom content file types.

As far as I know, Macs don't have "~/EA Games/blah blah blah." The only things I have in my Sims2 folder are the game, Bodyshop, Package Installer, and various tutorials. So where IS this EA Games folder?
PS. Has anyone had any success opening .package packages on a Mac? Grr, sometimes I really hate having a computer in the minority.

There are two sets of files you are likely to encounter. First are .pack files which, are the ones you install by double clicking these have a white page with the .pack installer blue icon in the middle. the content of these files; ususally skin and texture data will automatically be installed to the downloads folder which you will find in: user/documents/eagames/thesims2.
Package files are different these contain things like meshes, simantics data, etc these just have to manually placed in the downloads folder of The sims2. you can't edit these on a mac afaik. to get access to package file content you'll need a windows pc or virtual pc and a copy of SimPE.
Hope this helps clear up any confusion

Microsoft Office can be stopped by locking the ~/Documents folder. Unfortunately this seems to break The Sims 2. Is there anything that can be done against it? Or at least an option to make those folders invisible ...

At a WWDC session on gaming and the Mac, Apple specifically stated where games should stuff files like this, and ~/Documents was Apple's preferred location.

Why would someone want to do this?

Then someone at Apple is an idiot. These files are not files that I created and thus are not what an average user would consider "Documents." My Documents folder is where I save MY documents. A folder called Application support seems far more logical. Game developers could choose to create a ~/Library/GameSupportFiles or something like that if need be, but normal users should not have to deal with this kind of crap in the Documents folder.
