I know this game is a bit old but I thought i'd pick it up (Compusa has it for $29.99 locally now!) if the demo ran good on my Mac mini.

I downloaded the demo (here: http://www.apple.com/games/articles/2003/11/halo/ ) and installed. When I run it, the game will show the configuration dialog, then show the halo splash screen for a few seconds, then immediately quit to the desktop without any errors. I tried changing around all of the settings (texture detail, FSAA, pixel shading) to every available setting and it still crashes. I tried deleting ~/Library/Preferences/Halo and ~/Documents/Halo to see if a corrupt pref file was the problem. I also tried copying the "Shaders" folder over again from the install image, recommended from a previous post about a similar problem with the full version of the game. I also installed the ATI utility and tried making a custom profile for the demo which forced all of the advanced features off.

Unreal Tournament 2004 is running perfectly on my mini along with other OpenGL apps, so I think my Tiger install should be functioning properly.

Has anyone else had this problem with the Halo Demo? Maybe it is incompatible with Tiger (which is bad news, since the Demos' "Get Info" pane says that its at 1.5.2, the current revision for the full version also)

I guess my next step is to copy the demo over to my ipod and maybe try it on the Mac mini at CompUSA.

Are you having an non-Halo related crashes on your system? Games don't like bad RAM.

Nothing so far. I'm still using the 256mb Apple included with the mini; but it will probably be upgraded to 1GB if I can get Halo working.

Halo definitely works in Tiger for me and a number of others. It's probably something specific to your computer or maybe your account. You can try creating a new OS X user account to see.

Does your console.log file mention anything about Halo?

I guess that the problem was Tiger. I downgraded to Panther today and all of the game demos I have tried have worked correctly. I originally tried Halo, UT2004, Call of Duty, XIII, BF1942, and Warcraft 3, of which only Warcraft 3 and UT2004 would run at all.

I did get a kernel exception the first time I ran Call of Duty but otherwise everything has ran fine in Panther. I wonder if I should bother upgrading back to Tiger again.. the only different thing it had was Dashboard..
