Hi,

This is a trivial problem but a frustrating one. I have a brand new power mac g5 with 2gb RAM and a X850 graphics card. The machine is mainly for graphic design however I like to play the occasional game. However I have found that with many of my games, like Halo and Rayman 3, there seems to be a really really bad frame rate or refresh rate, even at basic 1280 X 960 resolution I am finding that the backgrounds when turning or moving are lagging when compared to the action on screen, flickering and shearing and it is very distracting. Considering the power of the card, I just cant think what I can do to improve the performace. I can lower the textures and resolution to a point where the game looks rubbish and it runs smoother but thats not the point of having such a high end card. Does anyone find this the case with Halo and does anyone have any ideas how to fix it? I have heard there are problems with the X850 card, but half of my games like No One Lives Forever, XIII and Unreal Tournament 2004 work fine!
Any help would be really appreciated!

Are you running the most recent versions of the problematic games?

You may need to check in the game options, for something called 'vsync' or 'enable vsync' or 'sync to refresh rate' or something similar. This will get rid of the 'tearing'. Also go into the Displays system preference and make sure you have your refresh rate set to something decent.

Since enabling vsync 'locks' your framerate to your refresh rate, you want to make it be as high as you can. For instance, if your screen is set to 1280x960@85hz, and vsync is enabled...you'll be running at 85fps tops.

i think i might experience the same type of "tearing" in both video playback and in games. can it have something to do with the 20" TFT? since vsync isn't availiable in the display set - is there anything else one can do to try to correct the problem?
(have i understood it correctly if the graphics card is trying to output signals at a conflicting rate to the screen refresh rate?)

best regards,
tobias
