I was looking around and thought that if there was a way to runs linux on my mac then i could play things like CS (because HL 1&2 are for Linux) I found http://www.mklinux.org/ , would this "work"? or is this Linux over mac really just for simple programs? or not even that....

Googling and found this great site too: http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/ma.../30/linux.html

You could run Linux on a Mac (there are several versions), but unless they have a PowerPC build of HalfLife, it's not going to make any difference.

Wait for the Intel based Macs, get one.
Then buy a copy of Windows XP
Format you new Mac's drive with two partitions.
Install Mac OS X in one, and Windows XP on the other.
Then pay 50 USD per game you want.
Install the game.
Duall boot into Windows.
Play at full blown speed.

... or give up on gaming altogether.

well I just got a new mac last summer... so i think what i'm going to end up doing is just getting the bottom of the line dell...

Or do you think that when the intel based macs come out that I could get tiger and one of the intel chips, and have it installed? that should be okay... unless the motherboard has to be all new for the intel chips ect. what do you guys think?\

And i'm not giving up on gaming... who the hell do you think you're talking to!

Within minutes of the release of the first Intel-driven Mac someone will have a good emulator running and you'll be able to play Windows games without having to screw around with a dual boot.

That's my prediction anyway.

I too have given up the joys of CS for the higher calling of computing that works. You don't have to give up games to be a Mac user. There's lots of good games on Mac, but of course, you don't get first run games and you miss out on some key titles--like CS, or Civ 3: Conquests.

Only bad thing is there aren't any of the GREAT games for mac, just a bunch of average ones. Counter Strike, despite it's faults, will always be my favorite FPS, and game in general.

I can't talk about now, because all the games I play are cross-platform or console these days, but Bungie's old games back when they were Mac-only were truly great. Marathon does show its age, but you can still see what an awesome game it was back when it was against Doom. And I'd say Myth stacks up favorably against most strategy games like it that I've seen.

They don't have Half Life 1 and Half Life 2 for Linux. You can run translation software that lets you play Half Life 1 and Half Life 2 from the Windows versions.

Actually, the Darwine project should already work on x86 macs, and more linux/wine solutions will probably be devv'd by then. I am fairly sure the Darwine project will be one of the quicker ones out there.

Anyway, as a sidenote, the Marathon Aleph One engine has the capacity for full 3-d models and maps. Not bad for 1994.

Darwine may be able to run Half Life 1 in OpenGL mode, but it's not going to run Half Life 2.

Hemling: How would an emulator work to play windows games on a mac if I would still have the PowerPc chip? And if so than how does the mac running intel chip help make an emulator to run windows games, couldn't someone just make one now? and if it would and you see an emulator please in the future, please post about it!

Flip,

It won't. Your PowerPC chip, like mine, will never run CS.

However, we can go get an Intel mini as soon as they come out and be in CS heaven. I mean, the game is years old. It doesn't take much power to play it.

CS has already been redone in the Half Life 2 engine, meaning it takes a bit more horsepower.

Whatever the case, it won't be playable under WINE in Mac OS X. WINE does not have enough DirectX emulation to pull it off.

according to gamespy.com/stats, original CS is still more played than the version for the HL2 engine.

and on the DirectX thing. the HL1 engine supports OpenGL.

not on the current line up of Macs.

anyway, on an intresting note, do a google search for "007 Nightfire engine" and see what comes up.

That's pretty messed up. Think someone could hack nightfire into halflife? That'd be sick. Especially since Mac users would download it and Valve wouldn't get one freaking penny. Dicks.

Why? If the engine is ported, all you'd have to do would be change the variables to the halflife version, right? Then just replace the folders that hold the game information.

But that's just it. The engine is already here. In the 007 Knightfire game. That's OSX ported already.

the game was already here 5 years ago, for the Classic Mac OS.
you see, Mac HL was ported and delivered by Logicware (I think) and payed for by Sierra.
It just wasn't released. Do a forum search for some history on it.

no, you can't, it's like trying to play quake3 on the MoH:AA engine, because MoH is based on the q3 engine.
if you wanted to do that, you would need the suorce code, but it would be a really dumb thing to do.
MacHL died, get over it.

wait for the intel macs and dual boot then.
