Hi,

I'm new to Macs and have an iMac running OS 8.6. I downloaded the Doom 1 shareware game but I cannot get it to run. Everything I click on (including the Read Me) says it can't find an extension or something like that.

Any thoughts?

You'll probably need all of the following:

DrawSprockets
InputSprockets
NetSprockets
SoundSprockets

They're all bundled in Apple's Game Sprockets archive at
ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Develo...ockets.sit.hqx

But if you really -can't- click on ANYTHING at all, you'd probably be better off erasing the hard drive and doing a clean install of the System Folder; use the 'iMac Restore CD' (or whatever it's called) to do so. Then, install the Game Sprockets mentioned above.

If you're still missing any key components in your Mac OS 8.5.x/8.6 install, checkout 'www.MacUpdate.com' or 'www.pure-mac.com'

i would update to os 9.2.2 or 10.3 (if you can)

how much ram do you have? (click on the desktop, go to the apple menu and select "about this mac". it should tell you how much built in memory you have.

you need at least 128 mb for os x 10.3, but you can run os 9.2.2 using 32mb.

you can buy os x 10.3 for about 40 dollars (£20) and os 9 for about 10 dollars.

also, the best games for os 9 are the Epic Banana games. not many people know about them, but they rock, and are really funny. Download "A Day At Work 2: Wednesday" and "Office Building".

wednesday is on google, but office building is on the info mac hyperarchive. search for them.
