So I just got a brand spankin new MacBook Pro the other day, and I love it. I have the PC version of Unreal Tournament 2004 and wish to use it on the Mac... is this possible or do I have to purchase the game again?

I don't know if the disk includes Windows and OSX binaries, but if it doesn't, you could use Boot Camp or the EFI hack to install Windows on your MBP.

That's rather unfortunate. Thanks though. I'm really trying not to put Windows on here, so no bootcamp for me.

I mailed the creators of the UT2k4 Mac port, but they were unwilling to provide an install option for me despite owning and having a CD-key for the PC version of UT2k4. Guess I can understand them, but then again not. I won't buy the same game twice (especially since I have the metal box collector's edition DVD).

You already Own a legal copy of Windows...use bootcamp and enjoy the better perfomance of the Drirect X optimized graphics. The mac version uses open GL, which while decent is not as fast as the Direct X win counterpart.

I tested UT2k4 on my Intel iMac under OS X and WinXP. WinXP was slightly faster, not by much.

Dude, I have the exact same problem. I just bought a MacBook a few days ago.
I *think* I have a solution. But I still have one last problem myself.
Here's what I did:
I downloaded the demo of UT2004. Then, I copied the data files from my UT2004 DVD into the UT2004 package. This, still will not work. You still have the wrong binaries. So I downloaded the "UT2004 Mac OS X 3369.2 patch." This is the patch that provides universal binaries for Intel Macs. When you run the patch, it will ask you to locate your UT2004 installation and you just direct it to the demo you downloaded. This will give you all the executable and data files you need. The last step is to get your CD-Key into this thing. If you try running it at this point it will give you an error message about an invalid CD-Key and it will ask you to reinstall UT2004.
So... doing some more Google searching I found this in the archive of the MacRumors forum.
http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/.../t-146922.html
"... the cd-key is located here: Unreal Tournament 2004.app/System/cd-key"
So, using TextEdit and changing your format to plain text, you should be able to type in your CD-Key and save it to that location. The problem I'm now having, is I really don't know if my CD-Key needs to be typed in a certain way. (On a certain line, without hyphens, with some additional text, etc.)
I'm actually writing this hoping someone can help out with that. Perhaps check to look at their file to see what it looks like and post it here without their actual CD-Key, of course.
I'm like 99.9% sure this is the last step I need to take to get it to work.
Thanks in advance,
-HG

There is no hyphen in the cdkey file name. Just type the key like this: FG234-J25AT-D1G64-99GTY

Thank you!
It works great!
I went ahead and put together a quick tutorial on getting it to work. Feel free to refer people with the same problem in the future.

Not working for me. I'm getting "You cannot open the application 'Unreal Tournament 2004' because it may be damaged or incomplete." This after following the instructions above.

Sorry to hear it didn't work for you. When you copied the data files over from your UT2004 CDs/DVD to the package contents of your demo, did you overwrite the files, or did you ignore files that were already there. I'm thinking that *might* be a possible cause. I don't think I clarified that. When I did it, I didn't overwrite any files. I'm not sure what affect might arise from overwriting. That's the best guess I can come up with based on your error message.
Double check you did eveything right. What I wrote wasn't very detailed, so maybe part of it was misunderstood.
Also, when I was trying this myself and testing it as I went along, I would open the application just to see what it did. The demo should run fine when you first open it. After copying over the data files, it should still run the demo fine when you try to run it. You'll get the splash screen saying it's a demo, the single player will be greyed out, and quitting the game will yeild a screen asking you to purchase the game. Once you update with the patch, things should be different. It should replace the image in the splashscreen not to be a demo, but before the game starts up in fullscreen, it should interrupt with an error message about the cd-key. Those are three points where you might want to try double clicking and seeing if you got the same results.
I'm betting it's either the patch or overwriting something with the data files.
If you still have problems, I'm happy to try and help out some more. But if you post again, try to be more descriptive with the problem and what other details arise when troubleshooting. When I get sometime, I'll also update the howto with more detail, clarifications, and screenshots.
Goodluck,
-HG
PS
It also just occured to me. What OS and Mac are you running? I'm using 10.4.6 on a MacBook. I'm not sure how it would work or if it would even matter were you running an earlier version on PPC.

I've done this several ways with no success. The first time I overwrote the existing files. The second-fifth times I did not. After copying the files, I did try running the app before applying the patch, and it ran. So something is happening when the patch is applied.
Are you installing from DVD or CDs? I have CDs.
I'm running 10.4.6 on an Intel iMac.

Hmm, yeah it does sound like it would be the patch, then.
Just to double check, you are using the 3369-2 patch, correct?
The error you're getting is when there is no binary to execute within the package contents.
For example, if you take take a program on your computer that is actually working, click to view package contents, then actually delete the contents, and then try to run the app, you'll get the same error you're getting for UT2004.
The binary for UT2004 should be located in /Unreal Tournament 2004/System/. And the name of the file should be ut2004-bin. In fact, running that should open a terminal which would then open Unreal Tournament 2004. Make sure that file is there. Since you're patching with a universal binary, also click to "Get Info" on the app. Under general and kind, it should state the file is a "Unix Executable File (Universal)".
And if you copied all your files from your CDs correctly, you should even have the ut2004.exe in there, as well.
Also, if you click to "Get Info" on the whole Unreal Tournament 2004 package itself, under general and version, does it say you are actually running 3369.2? If the patch was applied correctly it should be at that version.
I don't think having CDs or DVDs or even the version matters. Both should contain the same data files. These should just be the maps and textures and such that are missing from the demo.
If you find you're not running 3369.2, then evidentally the patch must not have been applied and we can assume that's the problem and go from there.
Any luck with this?

If I launch the program directly from the ut2004-bin file, it works. Sort of. Skins are missing, maps won't load (apparently I didn't copy over all the files like I thought I had???), I can't unbind the keys to change the keyboard controls, and performance seems pretty bad. My 3-year-old AMD 2500+ with 1G RAM and Radeon 9800 ran the game pretty well. I was hoping a dual-core iMac with a Radeon x1600 and 2G RAM would match it if I was running Universal Binary. And maybe it would, if I actually had it set up and running correctly.

Sorry it's not working well for you.
Is it really a universal binary you have there?
I'm running a 1.83GHz Core Duo with only 512MB of RAM and an underclocked X1600 and I can run it in the full 1440x900 resolution with most of the settings on their highest.
But yeah, I guess it sounds like the maps and such may not have been copied over right.
My best guess for the slowness is the patch didn't work.
And if your ut2004-bin file is there, I don't know why you're getting the error message you had gotten.
Strange that you're having these problems. I hope other people are having more luck.

A few things...
I used this to move over the CD version over to my mac.
1. I installed the whole thing on the PC side and used that as the "master" that I copied everything from.
2. I did not do replace all, and I had a lot of problems with things not looking right. Come to find out, you pretty much need to copy all (with replace) for the Textures directory. I copied files that were bigger afterwards. Some files in the PC distro were 100MB, but the mac demo were 4k.
3. If you are having the problem with the double click, go into the package, under Contents ->Mac OS and take "Demo" off of that file. That worked for me.
I haven't played online yet, but it seems pretty decent. I get around 60-70 fps on my 17" macbook pro, and around 24 on my 1.25Ghz eMac.

I can get UT2004 to launch only with the binary as well and I noticed that terminal logs lots of load errors like this;
"Failed to load 'Material PlayerPictures.cMercMaleAD': Failed to find object 'Material PlayerPictures.cMercMaleAD'"
I copied all the files from a full PC install without overwriting any of them. Do you know where the Objects listed in the error above might be located?

I got the game working now as well, but I did the opposite to what the previous posters have said:
I made sure to OVERWRITE every file from a vanilla PC installation of UT2k4 (note that I didn't overwrite the folders, which would erase any new files from the OS X version, but rather copied every file from within each folder instead).
Every other instruction I followed, though, and it worked like a charm.
The game now launches from the dock and inclues all skins and maps and hopefully online play as well.
The only problem I have is resolutions. The highest I can select is 1280x800 and I would very much like to select 1440x900. I am very suprised that they didn't include this option in the menus, since that is the resolution of the new intel Macs for which the latest patch is aimed at (being universal binary and all).
I haven't been able to locate any settings file for resolutions. Does anyone know where they might be?
EDIT: Found it, the correct .ini file was in the /Library of course. Game didn't work very well in that resolution though, mouse became laggy. Back to fuzzy graphics, but it's not a gaming laptop really anyway.

I believe Gordon, the developer, talked about resolutions before. I believe he had to get them into the PC/Windows version of the game, which he is not in control of (since he only does the Linux and Mac port), and he was successful in getting a few snuck in VERY early on. This late in the maintenance, it'll be unlikely any new resolutions will be added.

I see UT2004Grabber is Universal, for those with Intel Macs. Home
I tend to use the Santa Duck Toolpack found on this page as it is not fully automatic and allows you to selectively clean out the cache and move maps into the maps folder. It doesn't seem to move anything but maps out of the cache, though. Santaduck Downloads
