What part of my computer hardware is going to affect my gameplaying experience the most? I have a 1.67 GHZ Powerbook G4, and a 1GHZ iMac Flatpanel. Both have 1 GB of RAM, and the default graphics cards that come on the systems. But my games don't seem to play as nice as they should. What can I do to make my gameplay sessions more positive? The games I play are the Sims 1 and 2, Sims University, and Roller Coaster Tycoon 3.

PS. I tried to use the search function but it was giving me issues.

Are the processors on those systems even upgradeable? I don't believe so, which would make your 'choice' even easier.

Also, where do your 'expected' performance claims come from? They aren't going as fast as published and existing benchmarks, or you thought they would run faster than they do?

Well the games seem to slow down a lot, and "jump" or "skip" graphically. I guess I just expect that when the minimum requirements are about half of what my specs are, that having double the reqs would mean my games would play really really well. Like at least Playstation quality. I mean am I just expecting too much - are games on the Mac just supposed to be jumpy and slow, or what? I am not a big Mac gamer, in comparison to the gaming I do on my PS2 and Xbox.

Generally good performance with jumping and skipping in parts to me would indicate that you need more RAM. That said, neither of your machines are powerhouses when it comes to graphics cards, so depending on the type of game you like to play, I wouldn't expect drastic increases if you drop more money on RAM. They'd more than likely play as fast as they do now, but more consistently. If that's your aim, then get ready to drop some cash - and I'd do it sooner rather than later, as most indications are that RAM prices are on the rise. If you're just overall disappointed with how fast the games are running, you'd be better off focusing on your consoles for games and use the macs where they really shine - getting work done quickly and efficiently.

That's my two cents, in any event.
