By the demand for the component cables and the fact that they are selling for half the cost of the Wii itself on ebay shows that more people than Nintendo expected have at least 480p capable sets. All the sets I see that do 480p also do 1080i.

Doesn't the fact that people are willing to shell out half the cost of a Wii for component cables prove my point? Why do you think people wouldn't be willing to buy an HD Wii if it came out?

Just because it is a bit soon. I mean 2 years before the system you lined up like an idiot for gets replaced? On top of that many people wanted it from the start.. like backlighting on the GBA.

Not to mention your 2 year collection of Wii games are in low rez.

All that proves is supply and demand. For all we know 2% of the people who bought Wii's are looking for the component cables, and Nintendo stocked for 1%. I agree that HD would have been nice, but high prices for the cables don't really say anything about the overall HD demand.

See, SWG, you're wrong on multiple counts here.

One: component video does not equal 480p. Many TV sets, particularly those produced between two and five years ago, support component video but not 480p. Most of the people who got new TVs at this time have such sets, since it was impossible to find anything higher-end for under $1000 at the time (nowadays it's merely difficult). They are not going to upgrade their TVs just for a game console.

Two: Many TVs from that generation, and even many of the affordable TVs nowadays, support 480p but nothing higher.

Three: Are you so certain that Nintendo didn't anticipate this? The demand for the cables is still far lower than that for the Wii itself.

IInteresting... They've also hinted about a DVD-capable Wii. Perhaps this console will be more of a "platform" than past efforts? They could release minor tweaks and editions? Perhaps this Wii is simply the "core" model, in X-Box parlance, and we'll see the "premium" model at a later date..? The Wii Pro, all decked out in an aluminum casing -- complete with 1080 HDMI and HD-DVD? Hmmmm.

Personally, i'd prefer a standalone gaming console ONLY...no DVD player, etc....

It's like buying a cell phone w/ cameras, etc... id pay more for a phone/messenger device than i would for a device with multiple functions mashed together.... i just prefer dedicated devices speicalized in what they are designed to do.

Cheers

Does the Wii come with s-video or just composite? I thought I saw a pic with all the cables and it has both composite and s-video in 1 cable, is that still the case? Will my Gamecube s-video cables work with the Wii?

It only comes with composite. I doubt the Gamecube cables will work, since the Wii uses a different connector.

GameCube S-Video cables do not work with the Wii, sadly. While the GC used a connector dating back to (and compatible with) the SNES, the Wii uses a different connector.

The pinouts for this cable have already been analyzed: the Wii's video connector definitely supports S-Video. However, the S-Video cable does not come with the Wii.

Best Buy had a shipment late today supposedly—according to the woman on the phone—and they will have them available tomorrow morning when they open. So I will be there for the opening. Hopefully I get one. I'm pretty much "guaranteed one if I get there before they open."

Hmm, has anyone else seen the disc light issue that the poster above sees? Although he is slightly trolling (which is how I used to act back as an Xbox fanboy...funny story, that) I seem to have the same issue: My disc light comes on for .5 seconds or so then goes away.

I'm not sure I want to send away for a new console. It seems to me to be something that could be fixed with a firmware update (clearly the light still works), at least not until I beat Zelda.

Got my Wii yesterday and have been having a blast. While I didn't believe it at first, you actually can put a fair amount of energy into swinging the Wiimote around and can see how some overly excited people might let the thing fly out of their hands...

Wii Sports is fun enough by yourself, but you really need a second set of controllers to get the most out of it; too bad my local BB and other bigbox stores are out...

Tell me about it. I got a good whack just above my elbow as my friend tried to make a failed swing with the Wii-mote while playing Tennis in Wii Sports. And it was pretty hard, too. The area was tender for quite a while after. At least no screens have been broken.

You found an extra controller? Bastard.

I'm a bit sore from a few hours of playing yesterday. Boxing seems to really wipe me out.

1st gotta say, i was in the same boat as starman and dark helmet, looking forward to it but not expecting much. san jose game was sold out so i got to my friend's house in sunnyvale early to play the wii.

first thought: graphics suck!
2nd thought: this is fun
...this is very fun for a group of drunks, they ended up busting out the video camera laughing at each other trying to fish on zelda.
...some people can do it, some can't. maybe this isn't for a lot of video gamers, as you have to do a motion at a certain time instead of just hitting a button. maybe this is for casual gamers. people have problems until you say, just pretend you're throwing a bowling ball, or swinging a golf club, or throwing punches...then after a while, ok, now think of what that motion was and do it in a smaller motion.
...very fun stuff on wii sports, blown away by how much the little cartoon representations can be made to look like people. THAT was some drunken hilarity there.
...we're finally going to sleep now, but i think there's a wii in my future, you don't realize the crap graphics after a while, even with blatant jaggies trying to saw your head off, it's just too much fun

oh, and if you have "crazy adhd kids", maybe this isn't the console for them unless you can lock them in the room with a cheap tv until they learn how to use it.

Wii has been well receieved, i'm just worried about if the "fun factor" can outweigh ridiculously good graphics from PS3 and XBox 360.

They're very good on Zelda, but beware of Red Steel (the load times are horrendous there).

All disc-based consoles have this issue, even the GameCube: it's the nature of the hardware. What the GameCube developers perfected was the hiding of load times inside the gameplay. These techniques would eventually spread to the PS2 and XBox developers as well, and console gaming in general got better as a result. But the Red Steel developers don't seem to have learned this for some reason.

None of my local Best Buys had any. Like, at all. I asked the guy there, and he sighed and said, "Yeah, our shipment of Wiis never came in."

It does for me. Of course, I had great fun on my Atari 2600 and NES. Graphics are nice to have, but not overly important. I've noticed that I only pay attention to the graphics the first few times - after that, it's just part of the game.

I'm not sure they matter so much in "hard core games like Zelda" either, or at least not Zelda itself.

The graphics are just fine. Seriously. Have you even played it yet? I'm about halfway through, and I'm telling you: this game is beautiful. It's also really disturbing, but that's another subject entirely. Suffice it to say that the people who thought Wind Waker was too 'kiddie' won't be disappointed with this one.

Ok. I'm over halfway through Zelda. Here are my thoughts so far:

The graphics are drop dead gorgeous. If this is what the Gamecube was capable of, we have a lot to look forward to. I mean, the graphics are good at the start but there are some really amazing scenes ahead. The story really does pickup. Right now I'm in the snowfall dungeon, and it has to be the most creative Zelda dungeon I've played. The music is good. In some places it does sound like orchestrated music. It could simply be super high quality MIDI, but if you can't tell the difference, then it doesn't really matter. The game is super large, but fortunately there are warp points to get you around.

Spoilers Follow:

The game still has a bit of randomness. For example, upon entering the grove where the master sword is kept, the skull kid appears for no apparent reason. I haven't gone back to check if he appears again, although it is hinted there is a dungeon in that grove, so I may go back and see him again. This also seems to be the first Zelda game with explicit references to the previous games, namely OOT. In one scene, a character is mentioned from OOT that is not in TP (with a portrait that is a screenshot from Zelda 64). In another dungeon you receive an item you previously used in OOT (as in the exact item, and the game does note that "a previous hero" used that exact item). So this seems to be the first game to establish a chronology. Music is in these games, but it does not play nearly as big a role. Also about 1/3 of the way through the game an event happens that allows you to use portals without being in Twilight, which is fortunate. Speaking of Twilight, the light hunt ends at the same 1/3 mark, so those of you who are bothered by it don't have to worry too much. I didn't think it was that bad, kind of fun actually.

Another interesting note. The landmarks are in the same places they are in OOT, only they mirror OOT on the Wii because of the left to right swap on the Wii. Gamecube version should keep landmarks in the same spots as their OOT counterparts.

Spoilers end.

It would be hard to imagine the game without the Wii controls. They add so much to the game. Overall the game reminds me of OOT, mixed with the creativity of Majora's Mask.

Beyond that, my overall impression of the Wii leaves me hoping for a lot. TP is a beautiful game..hands down, and may win the title for best Zelda (I'll know at the end of the game - albeit probably not, because the transition from SNES to OOT was just soo MASSIVE; def a very very close second). More importantly, it shows what games for the Wii can be.

My slight concern right now is how nintendo / 3rd parties will take advantage of the Wii's capabilities. I'll be buying SMG, SSB:B as well as Wii Play (basically a $10 game) . Beyond that, I can't see myself going crazy for any of the titles that are expected thusfar; What really needs to happen is for a few new series to get going. Old platformers are fine if done very well, but get less satisfying with each game. The devs need to get going and come up with new games that take advantage of the Wii (somewhat like Red Steel was supposed to do) as well as utilize the graphics power the system has (I'm not expecting it to beat the PS3/360, but the Wii can still do beautiful things). When that happens, I'll be happy.

Yes I am almost done the second dungeon.

The graphics are fine, and the art direction is great. The problem is everything is a blur.

Anyone know if it's possible to get another sensor bar? I'm going up to visit my brother for a week and was thinking of taking the Wii, but I taped the sensor bar to the TV and don't want to remove it.

The more I hear about this thing, the less I want it now. Maybe I'll just stick with the GC version of Zelda and be done with it.

So much for being able to bring the Wii in the car for the kids (did you think of THAT, Nintendo??)

What do you do if you have a flatscreen TV? We don't have one yet, but we're looking into it.

The sensor bar is about 1/2" deep, so you'd be hard pressed to find a TV you couldn't attach it to.
