If you want to experience surround sound but use headphone / headsets for online gaming, this device from JVC might just be the ticket for you.
I got one of these to play W.O.W. on my Mac Pro. Connection is Optical Out > JVC > Headphones. The surround effect is great as is the clarity. The sense of sound space will spoil you and if you use Teamspeak or vent you will think some of the people are in the same room as you.
The surround effect works great and you will actually hear the direction things are coming from. It's obvious that using this amp rather than the headphone out, or line out produces much better sound that the amp inside the Mac. Sound clarity is the most noticeable difference.
I'm using a pair of Sennheiser HD-600's headphones and Cardas cable upgrade and the sound fantastic. Highly recommended.

Looks very interesting...for me at least. I live in an apartment so investing in a surround sound system is out of the question. I'm never going to be able to play anything very loudly while I'm here so good headphones that can output surround could be the ticket.

You will need one of these cables to go from the Mac digital out to the JVC. Make sure it's the one with the Mini Toslink Adapter. Also it does not come with an AC adapter. It's battery powered. I get about 10 hours on a set of rechargeable AA's

How does that work with headphones that generally only have two speakers built in?

It works quite well since it accomplishes the surround effect with DSP technology. Digitial Signal Processing has been around for some time now. I've had this feature in my Yamaha theater receiver, they call it Silent Cinema. The wife and me use it sometimes when we don't want to disturb guests late at night.
You need to hear it to really appreciate it.
Here is the forum I first learned about the device and a mini-review from a Xbox gamer.
