is there any good reason to spend the extra dough on the pro version of winXP, for playing windows only games on a new iMac?

Unless you're running dual processors, no.

To confirm...XP Home supports dual core processors, just not dual processors? I tried a quick Google but couldn't find anything concrete before I lost interest.

Dual Core Processors and XP Home?
linked on that page is what appears to be an official word .doc from MS, that confirms support for dual core processors in xp home.

Can't say anything about XP Home but XP Pro works great on a new iMac24" for gaming!!
I have my iMac since a week now and yesterday 2 PC gamer friends came for a visit.
They said the 7600GT would be way too slow for the game "Fear" at 1600x1200 with everything maxed out - well, I got 21FPS lowest, 46FPS average and 72FPS highest!
Needless to say that their eyes and mouths were wide open all the time after they saw the 24" screen and how great everything looked like!
Flatout 2 also works like a charm with 1920x1200!! It's incredible!

If able, always go with Pro over Home. In my experiences, it's less buggy and runs smoother.

It makes no difference what so ever for games. Just make sure you're running SP2 and latest direct X and updated video drivers and you'll be fine. Also Home does support dual core as others said, just not seperate physical cpu's.

In my new C2D Macbook Pro I use Bootcamp with XP Home SP2 single pack version I bought from Newegg.com and it works great. I can assign keystrokes for Tomb Raider Legends so I can get health and switch weapons at the touch of a key without additional software cause TRL has Keystroke configuration option built in. At 1400x900 with settings on high (No anti-aliasing) the game looks great and plays very smoothly BTW. Those who want Windows XP Home w/SP2 at a cheap price should check out Newegg;
