http://www.nubolo.net/

Some of you guys might remember wharf_rat, he did the original map editor and the game log viewer. I didn't even know about this until recently when I was Googling on another OS X Bolo project that's been abandoned, XBolo.

Well, wharf's taken the original game, reverse engineered it, and created an OS X version with Stuart Cheshire's blessings. This is the original Bolo packaged for OS X. A few things have changed, such as the graphics are slightly different and he reworked the networking.

Maybe we can organize a good 16 player game on Oil Rig.

Reworked the networking, but my brother and I haven't been able to get the networking -to- work with nubolo . On the couple of occasions we managed to start a game before giving up it synced out (or whatever it did) after a minute or two.

The last modified date on the website being this year is pretty promising though. And that might be a newer version than the one we last tried hmmm....

Same here - I tried to get it working so that two computers here at home could play each other. Any one individually can create a game, but no luck joining an existing game. Tried a lot of different ports without any success.

If anyone has any success, please post it here.

It works for me over the net for just one computer at a time behind my firewall, but the 2nd computer can't join. I tried using different local ports on each machine - no luck. It would be nice to be able to enter a local IP address to play with the person sitting right next to you on the LAN.

Regarding maps, if you grab XBolo, there are a bunch of maps included with it, and they seem to work OK with nuBolo too.

ok, well, i started a server, but when i try to connect to it by my ibook on lan (though through the tracker) it wouldnt work.
i get 'unable to open firewall tunnel.' which i dont understand, because i dont have a firewall running on either computer.
i also tried to connect to it via the local ip, which didnt either.

i hope the guy fixes this. then we can get an uber nice game going.

Frequently Asked nuBolo Questions

Addresses the firewall issue. If you're using a Linksys or something with a built in firewall, it could be filtering packets regardless if OS X's is on or not. I'm going to play around with my Linksys and the port forwarding options at home.

This is most of the maps from back in the day. If you go into the Classic/Popular section, pick up Chew Toy and DH Oil Rig. I think those maps were the most common.

These are my maps. Woo, 1998. I hadn't gone by Chuckles since old BBS days. Map II is broken, I noticed. I guess I'll have to fix it.

ok, so, i'm going to see if i can set up a server and still be able to play on my ibook.
if so, i'll keep the server going and we can arrange a decent game.

EDIT: that link doesnt work, try this one: Digg - nuBolo: Bolo for OS X!

Yeah - I saw their FAQ, but it's pretty sparse on specifics. I suspect the issue lies with their "firewall tunneling" algorithm, not with the router specifically, since I can play from any one machine on my LAN, but the 2nd machine can never connect with the server. Since there's no way to play a group game without the central server, I'm hosed as far as multiple local players.

Kick52 mentions running a server - that might be a way around it, but I didn't see the server anywhere on the nubolo site.
