Is anyone here playing Eve? If so, are you using Parallels or Boot Camp?

Just in case you're not aware it is coming to OS X soon. That's what I'm waiting for.

Yeah, but I'll still need an Intel Mac to play it. I dunno how soon its gonna be or if it will work the same. I read that the port wont be native, that is a wrapper, like an emulator.
I have no clue what that means in terms of playability, but I'd like to hedge my bets.

I'm playing Eve through bootcamp.. (imac 20") it plays very smoothly for me, a few of the people I'm in contact with are playing through bootcampo as well with no real issues, aside from that fact i'm in windows.. so now again losses the connection for no apparrent reason (don't worry it is rare)
As for waiting for the Os X version personally i can't wait, but I beleive your character will be transferable as it will be essentially be like logging in from a different computer, and as the main drag in Eve is the time it takes to train up skills - why wait? (Skill training works in real time whether you logged in or not.)
Sorry don't know of anyone playing through parallels... but if the Os X version is in a wrapper then i would imagine that it would play much the same...

I heard that it would be the end of this summer, but don't quote me on that. I'm pretty sure I read it in an article. I wish it would be sooner though.

They're using Cider, so either they're asleep at the wheel, or that number isn't right.

I remember about three years ago I ran an editorial, and they told me then that they were doing a Mac OS X version.

had an ask about like i said.. but no-one really had a clear date.. second half of 2007 was the general opinion... i still say if you have bootcamp then you might as well play in the meantime..
(personally i got bootcamp for several other games - and it was a natural progression)

Supposedly it should coincide with Revelations 2 or 3, I dont remember which.
Bootcamp works for me, though you can bet I'll be testing that Mac version as soon as it comes out. Now if only I could get an MSN client that does voice and a Mac version of IMVU, I would only have to use Windows for some professional software.
goMac, can you tell me anything more about Cider?

Funny, a friend of mine was telling me about this game and that I would like it just today, after I told him I wish there was a sci-fi massive multiplayer game, and I was looking to see if there was a Mac version.
I might try to run this on my Linux box for the meantime, but in any case, I'll be hoping this makes it to the Mac platform in good form soon.

Cider lets game companies make Mac versions of their games without doing any recoding or porting work. Which is why I don't understand why the Mac version is taking so long.

Well, all of the Ciderized games so far have been really buggy, so maybe they're trying to get rid of the bugs.

Yeah. I can't say I'm a big fan of Cider myself. Biggest reason so far I haven't bought Heroes of Might and Magic 5. I have Uru for Mac, and it's just not as polished as the proper Windows version (which I also played on my PC I used to have).

Heh. Sort of. They're packing it in WINE and re-releasing it for Intel Macs only. Not really the same thing.

CodeWeavers - Compatibility - View App - EVE Online
Several people on the eve boards have reported very good results even on a MacBook with the 6.1 update.
Still cant get in there myself, but its something to consider.
For those who havent tried it, its a fantastic game if you like sci-fi. I miss my fighter.

I've tried Eve-Online in Boot Camp & Parallels & CrossOver. With all three of these choices you need an Intel Mac.
As far as I understand, Boot Camp runs basically natively; therefore, the quality is basically 100% of playing on your normal PC. This is how I always play Eve.
Parallels 3.0 includes support for some 3D games. Eve-Online is not one of them. It'll run, but with graphical errors & you'll have to fidget a lot to get it to run in the first place. The quality reduction would mean you'd want to restart in Boot Camp anyways. Of note: with new updates, Parallels is no longer mutually exclusive w/ Boot Camp... you can use both nicely now.
CrossOver has almost full support for Eve. There are minor graphical errors & the quality/speed is not 100% as it is still using a hokey way to do the graphics acceleration. However, it is much better than Parallels 3.0. I've used this a couple of times & $30 or whatever may be insignificant, but I'd rather wait until Parallels updates their 3D acceleration, and in the meantime I use Boot Camp. Of note: I'm using a MacBook Pro which runs quite a bit quicker than a MacBook.
Overall, for gaming use Boot Camp... it's basically native & runs any game you want without almost any reduction in speed. Not a full (or recent) test, but gives a general idea (recent update of BootCamp 1.3 has improved drivers since then): Macworld: First Look: From the Lab: XP-on-Mac benchmarks
