I just got a macbook and have a question about mac gaming.
I use bootcamp to play age of empires 3, but there is a mac version of AoE 3. Would getting the mac version of the game make it run any better?

Nope. Most cross platform games are more optimized for Windows.

Yeah, there is a native MacOS X version: Inside Mac Games Review: Age of Empires III
According to the test., it runs very well on intel systems, but I would doubt it runs better than the respective Windows version on Bootcamp.

excellent. So as long as bootcamp is free, there isnt a good reason to pay for a mac version of a windows game other than for the convenience of not having to reboot?

Has anyone actually done their own comparisons with the same game, but PC & Mac versions running on the same intel Mac?
I'd be surprised if no one has by now.
Just wondered if there is a typical performance difference to be expected? %?
Thanks in advance..

I've run a couple, specifically Halo and Sims 2. Both run significantly faster via Windows, though I can't give you an exact percentage. Sims 2, for example, lags on medium settings at 1024x640 on OS X, but absolutely flies at 1280x800 with all settings on medium or max. It's because most games are written for Windows and DirectX, and later ported to OS X/OpenGL by a third-party who has only second-hand familiarity with the source code.
