I just found the full version of the ATi Catalyst 7.9 Driver for XP which installed fine on my Macbook Pro. If you navigate the ATi Website you only find a version checker utility which checks if your machine is compatible, and the Utility says it cannot find the correct hardware.

In order to install the latest drivers go here Mobile Catalyst Download and it automatically downloads the driver without having to check your machine for compatibility. I have just installed the drivers and am about to play the ET Quake Wars demo under Win XP. Happy gaming!

NOTE: This is for the Mobility version of ATi cards, if your Mac uses a Desktop ATi chip you can download the driver by navigating the ATi Website.

Go to Device Manager. Double click on your graphics card, look for driver details. What version does it say after you installed the new Catalyst? What GPU/Memory speed does Catalyst Control Center or Power Strip report?

Look here too

AMD Customer Care

Currently AMD does not provide any driver support for Mobility Radeon™ products. All driver and technical support for Mobility Radeon™ products is provided by the original laptop or notebook manufacturer. The drivers that are available for download at ati.amd.com are for desktop products only.

To download Windows Vista Mobility Radeon™ drivers or driver updates for your laptop or notebook product, please visit your laptop or notebook manufacturer's website.
Although they do list a driver here, but no mention of Apple on the list of supported notebooks.

Drivers and Utilities : Catalyst™ Drivers

I have Vista so I'm screwed. No Vista drivers at all for X1600 Mobility.

Its driver version 8.411.0.0. I know it worked because ET Quake Wars runs, which requires Catalyst 7.9.

ATITool reports 418.50mhz for the Core speed, 445.50mhz for the memory speed. The Catalyst control center reports the same settings, and says Catalyst 7.9 is installed.

BTW, why on earth are you running Vista? Its even worse than XP

That's the correct version. Have you tried it at 470/470?

ATI doesn't supply a 7.9 Vista mobile driver yet so I have to wait. I'm using Vista because it is better! I have no problems with it. It's fast, very stable and has all the same features of Tiger. It's just got messy control panels that's all. I just need to wait for newer Catalyst and ATITool.

iMacs use the mobility chip. This is the latest Catalyst driver for mobility chips under XP. However, the HD series is not listed.

Drivers and Utilities : Catalyst™ Drivers

For HD series you have to download the generic Catalyst package and modify it with Mobility Modder. These are the latest XP and Vista drivers:

And this is Mobility Modder

DriverHeaven.net: DH Mobility Modder.NET

It's pretty straight forward to install and if it doesn't work there's no problem rolling back the drivers. I would Google for opinions first because Mobility Modder might not have support for mobile HD series yet.

Curiosity got the best of me! Today I downgraded to XP to see if I could get my GPU up to faster speeds and ATITool working. I also heard games are faster on XP than Vista anyway.

I wiped Vista and installed XP. The damn thing was a little old by now so it needed 4-5 hours of downloading from Windows Update. It's still finishing some stuff now.

Catalyst 7.9 Mobility drivers work fine. Control Center isn't starting. I think I have to update my .NET frameworks which are still downloading. Power Strip couldn't clock higher than 411Mhz (same as Vista). ATITool launches and makes the screen go so dark I can't make out the cursor.

From the games I have launched at stock settings, speed hasn't changed at all! XP with Catalyst 7.9 is no faster than Vista with Catalyst 7.7! Makes me think the last 6 hours have been a massive waste of time.

On the bright side XP is 7GBs lighter than Vista but no faster. Software Update is messy and there are months of patches to download.

Finally finished all software updates and found out the best version of ATITool for Macs running XP is version 0.25 beta 14. I clocked the X1600 up to 470/470 and got a good improvement of 10-15% in all game titles and very little extra heat.
