I signed up for the 1 month free XBOX Live Gold membership but I found on Buy.com they have 13 months for $44. Can I buy that and use it with my current account without having to get a new username?

Yeah you can use the code from the 13 month with your username now.

You'll never have to get another gamer tag. If your Gold membership expires, you'll just be bumped down to Silver status - your XB Live account will remain active and you can upgrade back up to Gold at any point.
