You have to manually enter in the Gamertags but it works great, even says what scenarios people are playing within the game.

I"ve been using that for about a month and I like it a lot. It's faster than going to Xbox's site to see if any of your friends are online. What would be really nice is if it could alarm you if a friend comes online or not, very much in the same fashion as any instant messenger client does.
