I'm looking to import a PS3 and use it as a DVD/Blu Ray and hopefully in the future DVR box.
Is the PS3 region free for DVD/Blu Ray? Can I Import one from USA?

DVDs - No.
Blu Ray - No* ...however a lot of the movies ARE region free. (Note: If it is the Japanese version, the US and Japan are now the same region for Blu Ray now)

Not right now. The only way to get region free is to use a MOD chip, and at the moment none exist for the PS3. Better off just buying a cheap region free DVD player.

Wouldn't it be possible to install Linux on the PS3 and then use something like VLC to play (and other software to maybe even rip/store) DVDs? Just curious.

Why do that, when you can just rip and install from your Mac? No need for Linux. I have done that to test out the remote play feature with my PSP. Works fine. It reads AVI, AVC and even WMV files.

Linux on PS3 isn't as great as it sounds. It's more of a hobbyist's demo, in my opinion. X isn't accelerated, and you'd be spending far more time tweaking it than using it.
