I'm a server admin for Call of Duty, and even with Punk Buster, even with the latest and greatest patches, people can still cheat. Aimbots, wall hacks and even invincibility pops up frequently.

Do consoles suffer less from cheats? I mean for multiplayer games like Cod4, Halo or Team Fortress sort of games.

Yes. I believe Xbox Live for the 360 is quite (if not completely) cheat-free. Microsoft takes a very aggressive stance when it comes to cheating.

One single detected cheat means a lifetime ban for all multiplayer functions on that particular console so most people don’t mess with it.

I don’t know about the PS3.

I agree with Moep. Although when it came Halo there were quite a few mods that I've witnessed.

Xbox Live is pretty cheat free. You do see some people who try and cheat, but it doesn't happen a ton. Now, there are still a ton of jerks on.

After all the people I saw exploiting Team Fortress on Xbox, I'm kind of skeptical about Microsoft's actual conviction. One day, I couldn't find a single game where there wasn't somebody in the wall or the floor or a turret in the sky.

Valve is pretty good about policing cheating for the games on Steam; I haven't noticed anyone cheating in a while.

Map exploits aren't quite the same as cheating hacks... there more of a bug someone discovers than someone loading modified code.

Is it better on the Xbox 360? I'm SERIOUSLY thinking of getting a console (the Wii has been sold), and the 360 seems like the best choice - for me.

Yeah, I reckon that Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 are going to be the first games bought if I get the 360. No idea which version to get though - I don't need HDMI output since its going to be attached to my 22" monitor instead of the TV, but it would be nice to have all the extras that go with the Elite.

Decisions, decisions.

Wait for the Premium 60 GB that will replace the current 20 GB and keep the same price.

If you like FPS you'll be busy with a 360...

Halo 3
Bioshock
Orange Box
COD4
Rainbow Six: Vegas 2

I think they all come with HDMI now. Maybe not the arcade, but that'd be a dumb purchase anyway.

Yeah, I wonder when France will get the 60G model.
FPS, online, mindless shooting - works for me.
I'd like to try Team Fortress 2 as well as those on your list.
What do you guys pay for Live?

Good to know, I wish I were good enough to care/notice at those games.

I've never been able to aim well enough with a console controller in FPS games. I'm so old I prefer to aim with a mouse. I guess it's about the same thing as sending SMS text messages -- I'm just one generation too old to get it.

So if someone cheats and then sells the XB360, the buyer of that second hand console wouldn't be able to use Live??

[tangent]

I've been accused of using an aimbot when PC gaming, when I was not. Damn whiny kids.
