Why would you create a network that way?

Just hook up your xbox and iMac to the router directly and keep it simple I would say. Why would you want a static IP? Are you creating a web or game server?

Now if you're trying to fix the Xbox online problem where you get "Your NAT is not Open" message. There are ways to fix that - easy ways.

sigh.... no, you see my imac and xbox are not in the same room as my imac, router = living room, imac/xbox in bedroom, and i am refusing to shell out £60 for the wireless adapter for the xbox when i know i can do it for free through my imac, my imac needs to be on a static IP so i can port forwards and enable certain features to allow the xbox to connect to the internet and i can never be certain im on the same IP as there are over 4 computers in this house.

How do you fix that?
I'm on MacNN forums, but no longer have a Mac...

I think it's a bit of a hassle to set-up, at the very least time-consuming, but it is worth it (I also opened ports for torrents for my other computers while I was a it)

Go into your router usually under the gaming/applications tab and there is a place to enable a DMZ, enable the DMZ and put the IP of your xbox in the place provided. Usually you only have to put the last 3 digits of the IP as the place to enter it already has all the other digits. That will generally fix the error. But you should also give your Xbox a static IP so it keeps the IP that's in the DMZ.

I see Dakar V gives a step for that, which is what I was missing. If you do the DMZ, you don't need the port forwarding that Dakar V has. Ie. if you do step 1 in Dakar's link on setting a static IP and then in your router set a DMZ with that IP, that will work.

Of course Dakar's link gives another way of doing it, with a static IP and port forwarding.

Oh, and by the way, DMZ stands for Demilitarized Zone, it basically creates an area of your network that is not behind your router's firewire and is unprotected, which is ok for your Xbox, but not for your computer.
