I just got the alu-MacBook with 9400m graphics chip. I'm very impressed! It run Unreal Tournament 2004 easily with all the setting at maximum. I know that game is 5 years old, but I wasn't expecting performance like that.

I'm not a big gamer, but I'll probably grab UT3, Doom3, Quake4, Prey, and a couple of other games I missed out on being stuck on a PowerBook G4. Maybe CoD too.

That would be a five-year-old game at high resolution, wouldn't it?

Yes, high res, 1280x800, all settings at highest option.

Yeah, the game's old, but I've only a couple of games to measure it with. If this thing can play UT2004 at max settings, it ought to play new games at reasonable settings. Frankly, this graphics chip is a marvel.

I was concerned about buying this machine, thinking I'd be cheating myself out of some fun, and should have gone for the MBP. Definitely no regrets now.

I too am impressed with it's performance. I've got X-Plane 9.0 pulling a decent frame rate on 'very high', which is great imo. It outperforms my 2006 20" iMac CD, which is very respectable for this class of machine(price and size).

I can't wait for snow leopard to really tap into the 9400M's power.

Cheers

I'd be really interested in your CoD results. I presume you mean CoD4 and/or CoD: WaW ? CoD2 shouldn't be too shoddy. Do remember that you're only 'powering' a 13 inch screen. Be nice if someone did some bench testing of the 9400m in the 24" iMac. I've only found tests featuring the GeForce and the Radeon GPUs.

You can probably get a good idea from the MB tests here. It is quite playable at all that resolution - obviously the iMac uses a much higher resolution, but the test is at the MBs max res. That is just over 720p - not too shabby. After all, that's what the 360 and PS3 usually work at.

Same here. It's high resolution and graphics is very good. What more can you ask for? You can try more high-end games to better appreciate it.

Downloaded the Prey and Tomb Raider Anniversary demos. Both played awesome on maximum settings.

I played thru the entire Prey demo in one sitting. I'll definitely be buying that one.

That sure is a great game (Prey I mean). There were rumors a sequel was in planning a couple years ago, but who knows what happened to that. A confirmed iPhone version is in the works though.
I'm on MacNN forums, but no longer have a Mac...

Played the Unreal Tournament 3 demo with Windows 7. 9400M graphics handles this game very well at max settings. Awesome.
