Well it seems you can add Blizzard to the list of companies that think addressing the needs of Mac users is unimportant.

World of Warcraft has a Mimimap feature, a small map for navigating areas in game. It is one of the most used features of many players to see where they are.

Since the recent major patch 3.1 a month and a half ago for WoW, all interior areas in the game don't work on the Minimap for Mac users. The map is just blotched and pretty much unusable making game play extremely difficult in instance areas and in towns.

This issue was reported on the public test realms prior to the update being released. It's been reported on numerous occasions on their Mac forums. Blizzard just went ahead and released the patch knowing of the issue, and has released at least 4 mini-patches addressing bugs since then. But they seem to refuse to address this minimap issue. If it was happening on Windows machines, you can be sure they'd address it right away with an emergency fix. The best news Mac users can get from them is "it's coming soon, we promise!" but with every mini patch it fails to be addressed.

... if it was easy to fix they would do it, and its been stated multiple times that the fix will come with 3.1.2

Blizzard is (by FFAR*) the best about providing games for Mac, all of their titles release for Mac & Windows on the same disc, on the same day, rather than having to wait months for a shitty port. Honestly, quit your complaining, its not like the bug is game-breaking, it just makes it slightly harder to navigate in some areas.

I sense bitterness.

This is nothing, and I mean NOTHING, compared to how other publishers treat the Mac community. This is a small bug/issue that Blizzard will fix. This doesn't even warrant a post on this forum, let alone a reply (what the hell am I doing?). Blizzard is THE best game maker in the Mac community. They've treated us as equals for a very long time now. WoW is a ridiculously massive game, and when major patches are released, **** happens. Even to Mac users.

Patience is a virtue. Try it out sometime.

In the meantime, why not run the Windows version in WINE?

Because not everyone is a Unix weenie who can get WINE up and working correctly?

Any game that is rated gold generally just works out of the box, no muss, no fuss... In most cases it should be a matter of simply installing WINE via the package installer, and possibly X11 if it still depends on it. I haven't played around with WINE on OS X a whole lot, but I think that it was GoMac or somebody else that was saying that the OS X version is in parity with the Linux version now, which makes me confident that if this is the case this can be done easily.

I'm assuming that most of us are capable of downloading and installing standard OS X package installers.

Also, you're the weenie, weenie! You should be infracted for calling me a weenie!

Why pay for WoW if you can get a command-line version FOR FREE?™

I've tried using WINE for OS X to play some games before (silver-rated, I'll grant you), and it was rather unintuitive to set up.

Incidentally, yes, I suppose I am a Unix weenie.

What did you have to do?

I don't mean this as me challenging you, like I said I haven't played with WINE on OS X very much at all, but under Linux this would literally be a matter of installing WINE via your package manager/installer/whatever, and then just double clicking on your Windows .exe, assuming that the exe -> WINE association has been automatically established.

My wife plays Civ IV and both expansion packs and Spore this way, and I've run various Windows utilities and Firefox w. Flash this way too. Spore was very easy to install, although at the time it had some glitches with both stable and beta versions of WINE. My wife has logged countless hours in all Civ IVs this way, it works beautifully and is perfectly stable.

If your game is not going to work properly in WINE, you'll find out (if it isn't documented on the WineHQ site), but for me installing Windows apps via WINE has never been the problem. It's generally worth the attempt given the alternatives.

And before I get slammed for "not being a Mac user" (as if that really matters), my Mac is a Powerbook, so even if I wanted to play around with WINE on my Mac it's not an option.

Lucky all of you pay $15/month to just play the game. With those millions of dollars in pure net revenue, they'll be on top of that patch in no time.

Higher revenue does not make regression testing go faster.
